To make your graduation cakes really stand out, you may be thinking about using your local school’s mascots and logos in your decorations. But don’t act too quickly. You are not allowed to sell or gain profit from an officially licensed logo unless permission is first obtained from the institution it belongs to. Therefore, plan ahead and call your local schools. Explain to them that you would like to obtain permission for your bakery’s decorators to be able to use the schools’ marks. And be sure to make your calls soon, as the permission process can take anywhere from one week to two months to complete. Finally, after you obtain permission to use the logos, be sure you follow the strict usage rules—logos cannot be dissected or altered in any way, and all designs must be approved by the schools. to cover the cake. Be sure to have on hand all the colors that correspond with the colors of your area’s schools. It’s also a good idea to keep edible images of college mascots or logos on-hand. Bakery Crafts, DecoPac and Lucks all offer cake-decorating supplies such as plaques, picks, novelty candles, graduation hats and diplomas in the themed colors, logos and symbols of many major universities. Edible photographs are another nice way to personalize graduation cakes. Icing Images, Lucks and DecoPac all offer edible printing options. At Reyna’s, they will use a school photo from every year and put them all around the band of the cake.
