Barnum Think about this quote for a moment. Bakers, in my experience, are not big fans of the spotlight. They love the craft of baking. They are honorable and hard working. They strive for excellence in everything they produce. For these reasons, I have never enjoyed covering an industry more than retail baking. I have interviewed many famous people in my time, but my favorites are always those who do not seek out attention. Still, sometimes I wonder if the retail baking industry may be missing something by shying away from the limelight. The baking business needs showmen, too, just as any successful enterprise. Somebody has to grab the megaphone and lead the cheers. Otherwise, the crowds might not pay attention. You can make the greatest sweet rolls in the world, but if customers don’t buy your sweet rolls, you are not going to stay in business for long. In this issue, we take a closer look at one of retail baking’s great showman, Tim Kiedrowski. The owner of Kiedrowski’s Simply Delicious Bakery in Amherst, OH, offers quite a success story. In 1984, he bought the bakery where he’d worked for only a month. He kept working year after year, to grow the business and come up with new ways to generate excitement about their bakery. When we visited Tim Kiedrowski last year during our Discovering America’s Bakeries video series (see www.bakingbuyer.com), we discovered a diamond in the rough. His infectious enthusiasm and creative thinking brought innovative ideas to light. Every baker should watch what he has to say. His words inspire all of us to think positive and forge ahead. For this reason, we congratulate Kiedrowski’s Simply Delicious Bakery as the 2011 winner of America’s Best Bakery Contest, voted on by the bakery’s many fans. It’s a well-deserved honor, and a lesson for us all.
