eorge Dean, the person credited with
helping to found BEMA in 1918, once
wrote: "The organization was not
formed from selfish motives but purely for the
benefit of a great world industry." Those simple words had a profound effect on its early
leaders and charted a course that BEMA has
followed for the past 100 years.
Over the decades, BEMA's leadership
has focused on creating valuable programs
to help its members and the industry. A look
through the BEMA archives proves that value
in a variety of ways is a common thread woven throughout the past century.
Early on, in 1920, BEMA formed Bakery
Expo, the tradeshow that later became the
International Bakery Industry Exposition
(IBIE). BEMA remained focused on serving its membership by developing industry
sanitation standards, also known as BISSC.
)RU PDQ\ \HDUV %(0$ PDGH ¿QDQFLDO LQvestments to the industry, both through organizations such as AIB International as
well as member and baker scholarship programs. In the early 2000s, BEMA pledged a
$1 million to help establish the Grain Foods
Foundation. Member companies also benH¿WWHG IURP WKH HVWDEOLVKPHQW RI YDULRXV
committees that took on the challenges of a
growing baking industry.
Additionally, our leaders have been committed to bringing the industry together. In
the early days, that commitment could be
seen in organizing tradeshows, meetings
and functioning committees. More recently,
BEMA demonstrated our industry commitment by inviting bakers to meetings, establishing the Baking Industry Forum and
launching BEMA Connect. For 100 years,
BEMA has lived by the principle that real solutions are born when the right people are
brought together.
This determination to provide value and to
take chances is clear. BEMA's future will be

invest in and connect with our industry for
the next 100 years.
