The Cake Zone Raises the Design Bar
“We are often asked, How do you come up with such
magnificent cake designs?” explain Alla and Boris Levin, who
own The Cake Zone in Parrish, FL, near Tampa. “Truthfully, our
clients are our biggest inspiration. Nothing gives us more joy than
bringing a smile to someone’s face. Every special occasion or
celebration deserves an extra special cake. If you can dream it,
we can make it!”
Some of Alla’s fondest childhood memories are centered
on cakes and pastries. Her father was a pastry chef and baker
extraordinaire, always experimenting with fabulous fillings and
“top-secret” recipes. He’d often let Alla lick the spoon or help him
sculpt a decorative topper for a holiday cake.
As a teenager, Alla knew
more about sugar flowers, fondant,
marzipan, chocolates and cake batter
than many bakery owners. Looking
back now, she realizes how precious
those times were. “Making those oneof-a-kind cakes with my dad taught
me so much and helped shape me
into the person I am today,” she says.
Still, Alla never thought she
would become a baker. Taking on
the role of an award-winning food
artist didn’t even cross her mind.
Back then, she was more interested
in designing outrageous hats and
accessories than creating wedding
cakes. She grew up wanting to
be a fashion designer. In fact, she
has a design degree from a highly
accredited fashion design school in Europe.
When she moved to the states, she continued her studies at
the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan, NY. For several
years, she worked as an accessory designer for numerous
design studios in New York. Yet, as the years passed, something
seemed to be missing.
In early 2001, they made a decision to move to the Tampa
Bay area of Florida. After the move, Alla realized there was no
use for her hat designer’s skills under the Florida sun. So she
made a phone call to her father to discuss her frustration. He
said, “Bake a cake, Alla, decorate it, and put all of your heart
into it. You will feel better.” Alla recalls that as crazy as that may
sound, it’s exactly what she did. “I baked a cake, decorated it
and admired it,” she says. “That day will go down in history as the
day The Cake Zone was born.”
The Cake Zone was rated among the top three “Florida’s
best bakeries” in 2012, and their cakes are featured in bridal
magazines and TV programs (Bridal Boot Camp on The Ricki

They have created cakes to match
everything from a client’s favorite reclining
chair to stacked tea cups, party boxes,
singing cows, Faberge eggs, topiaries
and painted porcelain vases featuring
gorgeous flower arrangements – all
out of cake and sugar. Their cakes are
guaranteed to be just as delicious as they
are eye-catching.
Beyond cakes, The Cake Zone
features a wide array of sweet treats,
including innovative Little Tipsy Cakes.
These mini cakes in mason jars came
from the idea of turning classic cocktail
recipes into a cake.
Now an accomplished pastry chef
and sugar artist, Alla still uses her dad’s
recipes; everything they do is made from
scratch. The Cake Zone bakes all of its
cakes and makes desserts with fresh eggs, sour cream, sweet
butter, organic heavy whipping cream, fragrant nuts and top
quality cocoa powder, and the best quality Belgium chocolates.
Through it all, The Cake Zone remains a family business.
“We work as a team,” she emphasizes, “and we love what we do
and we take a lot of pride in everything we create here at The
Cake Zone. We are not a production line, we chose quality over
quantity. We never stop learning new skills and techniques.”
