SIZING UP SPEEDS. Vertical f/f/s
machines can operate using a wide
variety of speeds. Servo motors allow
users to move film faster and create
bags faster, whereas conventional motors and air-driven baggers are slower,
according to Ms. Davis. Also, creating
larger bags will decrease the speed of
the machine.
Food trends such as portion control and convenience are impacting
the suppliers of vertical packaging
machines. Speed and efficiency are
driving most packaging decisions, according to Mr. Almond. "What we are
seeing from the people we deal with is
a greater demand for small bags that
require higher speeds with the utmost
efficiency," Mr. Almond said. "Because
they have to make a lot more small
bags, they need more machines to do
it, so we are trying to be as efficient
and creative as possible."
Within the past year, Weighpack has
introduced its XPDius and JR baggers,
which are designed to compete with
other high-speed baggers, according
to Ms. Davis. And one of the ways
the equipment vendor has been able
to compete, she said, is with price,
noting that its "machines are a fraction of the cost and provide all of the
same benefits."
The two qualities bakers desire most
from their vertical f/f/s machines, according to Ms. Davis, are reliability and
price. "There are many manufacturers
now, so customers need to be assured
they are receiving a quality product
and not paying obscene costs," she
said. "We offer a high-quality product
at a reasonable price."

that its high-speed baggers will not
waste additional film. "What we focus
