The Peerless Group, Sidney, OH, set the protocol standard for data
communications between its line of mixers and material handling
systems (dry and liquid) in the bakery. "As technology advances, the
need for a high level of exchange of data is required for the best system
performance," said Greg Balnoschan, director of engineering. "We integrate with a large variety of machines and manufacturers, and there
is a real need to have a set of standards, so we have taken this step that
we feel is of great help to the industry."
The standards, available on www.thepeerlessgroup.us, are aimed at
increasing the efficiency as well as effectiveness of integrating unit machines into systems. "A key area of development for Peerless products
has to do with the digital aspect of our equipment," said Dane Belden,
president. "The first wave of automation has been focused at decreasing labor content, but the second, and arguably more important wave,
is one of process improvement. By developing this communication
standard, we are laying the foundation for tangible process improvement initiatives for bakers." By establishing this protocol, Peerless
hopes the exchange of information from machine to machine will
enable systems to feature more refined process control.
"There is another component to making the communications
protocol so readily available on our Web site," said Matt Zielsdorf,
vice-president, sales and marketing. "Customers, as well as other machinery suppliers, can benefit from a smoother and quicker startup as
machines will more readily integrate by following these standards."
The company plans to expand the communications protocol to
all Peerless Group product lines and publish them for the use of the
market. "The Internet is a great conduit for the distribution of this
type of information," said Mr. Balnoschan. "And we will continue to
build technical content on our Web site for the industry to access this
information because we all benefit."

AIB International launches
endowment campaign
The American Institute of Baking International (AIBI) announced a
