Turkington USA shuts down
Turkington USA closed its US headquarters in Clayton, NC, and laid off more than 100 employees, according to filings with the North Carolina Department of Commerce. The manufacturer of ovens and other bakery equipment filed a notice with the state under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act and indicated it appointed a temporary receiver to either wind down or sell the business. No decision on the business had been made as of press time.

GMA reports progress in sustainable business practice
The Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) released a report detailing progress and achievements by food, beverage and consumer products companies that are trying to reduce their environmental footprints and promote sustainable business practices. The Environmental Success Stories in the Consumer Packaged Goods Industry report was compiled by PricewaterhouseCoopers and features industry success stories in the categories of air, water and waste management. “Food, beverage and consumer products companies have a longstanding commitment to improving the lives of consumers, and that includes environmental stewardship,” said Pamela G. Bailey, GMA president and CEO. “This report showcases not only the considerable progress GMA members are making toward greener facilities, supply chains and products but also the innovation and creativity that has made this progress possible.” Each of the stories selected for the report demonstrate some or all of the following elements: innovation in system or product design, a quantifiable return on investment, engagement or collaboration with external stakeholders, and reduction or improvement in efficiency of environmental factors. The report highlights a diverse cross-section of initiatives from an equally diverse slate of manufacturers. Among the success stories featured include companies that are converting inedible food waste to energy, reclaiming water from the manufacturing process and cutting emissions by using underground limestone refrigerated storage facilities. “GMA member companies believe that sustainability is a journey, not a destination,” Ms. Bailey added. “They will continue their drive to find new and innovative ways to reduce their environmental footprint and preserve natural resources while providing consumers with the high-quality products they expect from our industry.” The report is available online at www.gmaonline.org.
