Market commentary for one-week period ended June 28, 2013

Egg Products
Egg product prices were steady last
week except for the seemingly nonstop
surge in dried egg whites, which posted
sizable price gains as leading fast-food
restaurants continued their booming
business in whites-only breakfast offerings.
The 15c-a-lb surge in dried egg white
prices last week was a sign that the balance
was lacking given the robust demand for
whites and the lackluster interest in the
leftover yolks. Some observers conjectured
that customers for dried egg whites will
become dissatisfied if prices top $7 a lb,
with the top end of the price range already
at that level. Dried egg white prices have
soared 45% since late February.
Though prices remained stable for
dried yolks, there are limited uses for
them in food manufacturing; one of the
most dependable during the summer
months is in pre-made salad dressings.
Shell eggs gained ground on somewhat
tight supplies and strong seasonal demand
related to the July 4 holiday, when many
social events involving food include eggs
on the menu. The outlook was for demand
to slacken by the coming weekend.

including dried whole eggs, dried yolks

Cocoa
Cocoa powder

prices were mostly
steady, although red alkalized was quoted
5c a lb lower by some processors. Trading
remained slow. Some professionals
said they believe cocoa prices have
fallen to such a low point and margins
have narrowed so significantly, while
cocoa butter prices have increased,
that a rebound in powder prices and a
concomitant fall in butter prices may be
in the offing. Prices for 10% to 12% natural
powder were at four-year lows.
“People who have been fishing for
lower prices have just about run out of
places to fish,” a cocoa processor said.
The cocoa futures market continued
to test support at $2,150 a tonne. The
September futures contract, currently
the most actively traded, settled near a
12-week low toward the end of last week.
Cocoa futures, despite being popular
with technical traders, have been unable
to get traction at higher levels because
of a favorable weather outlook in West
Africa and uncertainty about demand. FBN
