Anuga:
A taste of global food and
beverage innovations
The biennial exposition will be held Oct. 5-9 in Cologne, Germany
he millennial demographic
is turning out to be
an incredibly diverse
generation of consumers, and
this is on a global basis. Soon the
demographic will dominate the
adult population and marketers
may want to make sure their
offerings appeal to this “foodie”
generation.
“Millennials are very demanding, as well as adventurous and curious, especially with
food and beverage,” said Donna
Hood Crecca, senior director
with Technomic, Inc., Chicago.
“They like to try new products
and they want authenticity.”
This curiosity for new, different, ethnic and authentic has
food and beverage buyers from
all over the world heading to Cologne, Germany, this Oct. 5-9, for
the biennial Anuga exposition.
Anuga is an exposition firm that
brings together the suppliers and
decision makers of the global
retail trade and food service markets. The trade show is where
innovative new products debut
and trends start to take off.
Anuga features 10 specialized
segments in a single location.
The segments are: bread and
bakery/hot beverages, chilled
and fresh foods, dairy, drinks,
fine food, food service, frozen
food, meat, organic and retail.
There were more than 6,700
exhibitors from almost 100
countries at the 2011 exposition.
An estimated 155,000 executives
from 180 countries visited the

developers, as well as ingredient
suppliers, also find Anuga beneficial, as it helps identify trends
and provide ideas for future innovations.
For 2013, Anuga organizers
have identified 10 trend topics
that will be highlighted throughout the 10 segments. All of the
trends are becoming increasingly
important to all types of food
and beverage manufacturers.
The trends include finger foods,
gourmet products and regional
specialties, halal food, health and
functional food, ingredients, kosher products, organic products,
private label, vegetarian products, and Fair Trade products.
Innovations that debuted in
2011 included Belgium’s Rolph
& Rolph S.A.’s muffin bags,
which are piping bags filled with
all-natural muffin batter. A baker
simply defrosts the batter bag
prior to dispensing into muffin
tins. The batters are available
in four varieties: almond, apple
and cinnamon, chocolate and
chocolate moelleux.
From the United Kingdom,
Dr. Karg showcased Kracker, a
line of baked whole grain wheat
crackers featuring nutritious
seeds. Free of preservatives,
additives or colorings, the highfiber crackers come in four flavors: cheese and tomato, ham
and cheese, pumpkin seeds,
and sesame and linseeds.
Germany’s Tillman’s Convenience GmbH introduced the
ultimate in ready-to-eat burgers. Burger zum Toasten, which
translates to “burger for your
toaster,” comes frozen. Each
package contains two individually wrapped, fully cooked beef
patties, two pre-cut buns, two
packs of the company’s special
burger sauce and two paper
serving pouches. Both the burger and bun get warmed in the
toaster for convenience.
Also from Germany, Probiotan GmbH introduced Tan, a
slightly carbonated, sour milk
drink that is less viscous than
kefir and rich in probiotic bacteria. Tan has been consumed
throughout the Caucasus mountain region since ancient times
and in recent years has started
being produced throughout
Europe. It is usually consumed
plain, but if flavored, it will not
contain added sugars. The company produces it in a variety of
flavors, including banana, carrot, cherry, dill and strawberry.
The fruit and vegetable varieties contain puree or concentrate for natural sweetness.
This year’s show is being promoted with the phrase “taste
the future.” Organizers are emphasizing the importance of being on top of innovation. That’s
what Anuga is about.
