MILLING INDUSTRY PROFILES
US. The company said the project is part of a " longterm
investment in the Mountain West market and
will enable the company to continue to support
customer growth through improved efficiency,
optimized capacity, and enhanced capabilities. "
The company said it will be adding 9,500 cwts
of daily milling capacity to the mill by expanding
its existing milling units there, noting that
expansion is the first at the facility since 1999.
Bühler Inc. has been selected as the principal
equipment supplier for the mill. Ardent Mills
said the facility will continue to mill white,
whole wheat and organic flour, together with
specialty flour (e.g., spelt), " as needed. "
Groundbreaking on the project is expected to
begin this summer with completion anticipated
by the end of 2026, Ardent Mills said.
Plans to expand Commerce City were announced
almost exactly six months after Ardent Mills
said it would cease operations at its flour mill in
Port Allen, Louisiana, US, later in the spring.
* Parrish & Heimbecker, Ltd. (P&H) and
Picton Terminals by Doornekamp will build a
new bulk agricultural marine terminal at Picton
Terminals in Prince Edward County, Ontario.
The facility on Lake Ontario will provide a closer,
more efficient delivery option for corn, wheat and
soybean farmers in eastern Ontario, the companies
said in their Aug. 15 announcement. The construction
of storage silos and receiving buildings is set to begin
this fall, with the terminal expected to be operational
by 2026. The cost of the project was not disclosed.
The new terminal will significantly reduce
travel time for local farmers, alleviate truck
traffic on Highway 401 and enhance the overall
efficiency of the agricultural supply chain, the
companies said. With high throughput and
rapid turnover capabilities, the facility will be
designed to meet the needs of the region's farmers
while expanding P&H's export capacity, which
currently serves customers in 24 countries.
SEPTEMBER 2024
* Vernon " Red " Tegeler retired after a 52-year
career at Siemer Milling Co. that saw him emerge
as a company leader and devoted contributor
to the milling industry through the International
Association of Operative Millers (IAOM).
Tegeler began working at Siemer Milling, Teutopolis,
Illinois, while in high school in 1972. He was named
head miller in 1985, vice president of production in
1990 and senior vice president of strategic initiatives
in 2019. His retirement was effective Sept. 26.
Tegeler joined the IAOM in 1979 and served a
term as president in 1995. In 2007, he received
the IAOM's highest honor, the Gold Medal Award
for service, which has been bestowed only 22
times in the association's 128-year history.
In presenting the Gold Medal, David Neff,
who was chairman of the awards committee that
year, described Tegeler as a " true champion "
of the IAOM and a continuously active member
who served the association as a committee
member, a mainline speaker, and as an officer,
which culminated in his tenure as president.
Tegeler was recognized as IAOM Milling
Operative of the Year in 1994.
Tegeler also was active with the Grain
Elevator and Processing Society (GEAPS) and
was honored during GEAPS Exchange in 2017
for 25 years of continuous membership.
* Grain Craft has acquired Central Milling, Inc.,
one of the largest suppliers of organic flour in the
United States. Characterizing the transaction as
a partnership, Grain Craft said Central Milling's
leadership team will continue operating the business.
Based in Logan in northern Utah, about 50 miles
north of Ogden, Central Milling has been milling flour
for more than 150 years and has focused on organic
milling for more than 50. The company operates mills
in Logan, Richmond and Collinston, Utah. The latter
two locations are both within 20 miles of Logan.
Between the three milling locations, Central
Milling has aggregate capacity to produce 6,000
cwts a day of flour and specialty grains and specialty
milled products. The transaction does not include
KGBS, an affiliated bakery distribution business
located in Petaluma, California, US, that sells a
variety of flours, mixes, sweeteners, yeast and a
full complement of other bakery ingredients.
Central Milling became an employee-owned business
in the 1990s, and the operation currently has more
than 90 employees. Grain Craft said the company's
leadership team and its workforce will remain in place.
* Bay State Milling Co. has acquired assets of Montana
Gluten Free Processors LLC, a producer and processor
of gluten-free oats and related food products.
Bay State Milling assumes full ownership of
the Montana Gluten Free's processing facility in
Belgrade, Montana, US, after having partnered with
the gluten-free oats company since 2016. Financial
terms of the agreement weren't disclosed.
As Bay State Milling Montana, the business
addition expands Quincy, Massachusetts-based
Bay State's operations to 13 milling, processing,
lab and commercial facilities across the United
States and Canada. Walker Humphries, senior
vice president and general manager of oat milling,
has been named to oversee the Montana facility,
which handles SowNaked Mindfully Farmed
Oats, a brand of non-GMO, hull-less oats.
Grown and processed under the gluten-free
Purity Protocol, SowNaked oats are handled in a
specialized supply chain to ensure less than 5 parts
per million (ppm) of gluten, well below the Food
and Drug Administration's threshold of 20 ppm
and the Gluten-Free Certification Organization's
standard of 10 ppm, according to Bay State.
Family-owned Bay State Milling also produces
SowNaked oats at its milling and processing site in
Woodland, California, US. The company's other milling
and processing facilities are located in Tolleson,
Arizona, US; Platteville and Sterling, Colorado, US;
Indiantown, Florida, US; Bolingbrook, Illinois, US;
Winnona, Minnesota, US; Clifton, New Jersey, US;
Mooresville, North Carolina, US; and Saskatoon,
Saskatchewan, Canada. The Saskatoon facility,
which processes gluten-free oats, stems fromBay
State's 2017 investment in MGM Seed & Grain.
* Shrene White was named vice president of
environmental, social and governance (ESG) and grower
relations at Denver-based Ardent Mills while Kurt Long
was named vice president of Emerging Nutrition.
White, previously general manager of Emerging
Nutrition, will oversee environmental sustainability,
responsible product sourcing, social responsibility,
grower relations, and overall ESG governance
within the organization. She has more than 33
years of industry experience and has been at
Ardent Mills since its inception in 2014.

he led strategy and business development.
He spent more than 12 years at ADM in many
roles, including leading the company's global
specialty ingredient systems business.
* P&H Milling Group, a division of Parrish &
Heimbecker Ltd., will build a new C$241 million
($177.5 million) flour milling facility in Red Deer
County, Alberta, Canada, with an estimated
daily milling capacity of 750 tonnes of wheat
supplied by Western Canadian farmers.
Construction of the facility was announced
Sept. 6 with a groundbreaking ceremony that
included government of Alberta and Red Deer
County officials, underscoring P&H Milling's
support for Canadian agriculture and commitment
to meeting demand in the food industry.
The facility will be equipped with advanced
processing technology designed for high
throughput, energy efficiency and a low carbon
footprint, P&H Milling said. In addition to the
milling operations, the site will include offices,
warehousing, logistics infrastructure, rail siding
and provisions for future expansion. The facility,
situated between Calgary and Edmonton, is expected
to be completed and operational by fall 2026.
The construction of the Red Deer facility
is expected to generate up to 200 jobs, with
27 full-time skilled positions available once
operational. The mill will serve a variety of enduse
customers, including commercial bakers,
retail bakers, large bakery wholesalers, and
major pizza commissaries. Additionally, the flour
produced will support the export of manufactured
products to bakeries in British Columbia and the
Pacific Northwest region of the United States.
* Ceres Global Ag Corp. will continue and expand
its regenerative agriculture partnership with
Miller Milling Co. in 2025 to deliver local,
scalable solutions to wheat growers in North
Dakota, the companies announced Sept. 5.
By implementing advanced nutrient practices,
Ceres said its regenerative agriculture program
improves agronomic and environmental outcomes,
enabling the adoption of sustainable practices that
enhance nutrient use efficiency, which benefits the
entire supply chain, from growers to millers.
Ceres said it implements its regenerative agriculture
program with a hands-on approach, being in the fields
either directly or indirectly through joint ventures
and third-party partners. By leveraging Ceres'
comprehensive regenerative agriculture solutions
and partnerships with farmers and end-users,
the company aims to be at the forefront of driving
the adoption of sustainable growing practices.
Miller Milling, one of the largest wheat
millers in the United States, said the partnership
with Ceres has shown positive results.
