The system, which becomes fully operational this fall, will generate renewable energy and diminish wastewater disposal. The biodigester marks just the latest in a decade-long commitment by the company to seek out alternative fuels and energy as a part of its ongoing sustainability program. The company said an additional sustainability benefit of the installation will be an overall reduction of 27,750 lb of carbon dioxide emissions that would 16 * IBIE * otherwise result when diesel trucks haul off wastewater each week from the plant for disposal. Referred to as "mechanical stomachs," bio digesters use microorganisms to consume organic material, breaking it down to produce biogas, a renewable energy source. "We are looking forward to the many environmental benefits provided by the new biodigester," said James McKeown, BBU's director of sustainability and co-chair of the American Bakers Association's Energy & Environment Committee. "We Monday, October 10, 2016 are continually looking for ways to build on our commitment to sustainability, and the reduction of our off-site waste discharge will reduce Hazleton bakery's carbon footprint and natural gas usage." Earlier this year, BBU announced a major solar energy installation at its Escondido, CA, baking plant. Additionally in March, BBU introduced a fleet of vehicles fueled by emissionsreducing, domestically produced propane autogas. The company's 84 new Ford F-59 trucks, equipped with Roush CleanTech fuel technology, operate in three major markets. BBU actively participates in the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star Challenge for Industry. In Mexico, nearly 100% of the electrical power consumed by parent company Grupo Bimbo comes from its wind farm in the southern part of that nation. - Milling & Baking News
