GOING ALL IN
Consumers are looking for snacks to fill a variety of needs,
and snack makers are giving them new flavors and formats.

WHEN IT COMES TO SNACKS, American consumers
want it all, and they want it now. Many crave the
excitement of new flavors spiked with heat or tantalizing
global influences. Others seek the nostalgia
of food they ate as children but with elevated flair.
They also are looking for snacks that are better for
them, fill a dietary need or are better for the planet.
That's a tall order for a snack maker.
" The real winners of the future will be the ones that

healthy choices
and moving to
indulgent ones.
can marry healthfulness with flavor and indulgence, "
said Lynn Dornblaser, director of innovation and
insight, Mintel. " When I say healthfulness, I don't really
mean low fat and low calorie, all those traditional
ways we've talked about health, but more about
wholesomeness, good-for-you ingredients. But also
good for you, good for the planet. That sense of holistic
health, which doesn't mean it can't have fat and
calories and cholesterol and all that kind of stuff. It
probably needs to be an inherently good source of
fiber or with the healthy halo of certain ingredients. "
There are no rules
Four in five consumers say they are looking for
snacks to improve physical and emotional health,

while 85% say they eat at least one snack a day
for sustenance and one for indulgence, according
to the third annual " State of Snacking " consumer
trends study from Mondelez International,
Chicago.
Many brands are finding the balance between
tasty and better for you.
" I think the desire for organic foods is here to
stay, and I think it's going to continue to grow as
people become more conscious of what they put
in their bodies, " said Barry Levin, chief executive
officer at Snak King Corp., City of Industry, Calif.
" But I still think people when they're buying a
snack, they're looking to get satisfied, and they oftentimes
want that indulgent snack. It's their treat.
But I think people are trying to eat healthier. "
He said that although the coronavirus
(COVID-19) pandemic brought people home and
eating meals together, the grab-and-go mentality
is still present, and snacks are a good fit for that.
And he said the definition of a snack will continue
to evolve, an opinion shared by Ms. Dornblaser.
" There are so many more choices now. There
aren't any rules about what a snack is. Anything
