For instance, you should use both the fronts and the backs of the product signage in your display case. The front of the sign that the customer sees should contain one or two product-attribute bullet points. The back of the sign should be much more detailed—a sort of “cheat sheet” for the employee. Include short talking points about the product’s health attributes, ingredients and selling features that the employee can read and communicate to the customer. Menu Lists are another ingredient education strategy that Monford suggests to help both employees and customers. Menu Lists are given to each employee and they simply group the behind-thecounter product offerings into to several categories: low fat; low salt; gluten free; ancient grains; nut free; etc. ”Armed with that categorical list, employees can then wear buttons that say, ‘Ask me about our fat free products!’ as one example,” Monford says. That opens the door for customers to ask about any ingredient curiosities they may have, and leaves employees wellequipped to answer. Another suggested strategy is to take advantage of available technology. “Create an internal portal that employees can log into on a kiosk and see a summary of quick product facts,” Monford says. “Perhaps incorporate a short YouTube video that demonstrates how the product is made and with what ingredients.” The employee can then convey that information to the consumer.
