Swiss Farms, Schnucks and Whole Foods offer customers unique formats in which to purchase and enjoy their bakery and foodservice products.
by Anna Comstock Drive thru, dine in and happy hour are not terms that are typically associated with supermarkets. Supermarkets tend to be more closely associated with words and phrases such as one-stop shop, large and timeconsuming. In an effort to really get to the heart of what today’s shoppers are looking for, though, stores such as Swiss Farms, Schnucks and Whole Foods are redefining “supermarket.” With its drive-thru concept, Swiss Farms is truly serving on-the-go shoppers. Without ever having to leave their cars, shoppers can pick up supermarket staples and family-sized foodservice options, all in a less-thanone-minute transaction. For those people who would rather relax over professionally-prepared food, there are Schnucks dine-in instores, where customers can sit down at one of the numerous tables to enjoy their meals. And finally, people in Westlake, WA can even choose to meet for happy hour at their local Whole Foods Market. With different food options on different days and no corkage fees, it’s an appealing alternative to traditional after-work hot spots.
Floor to ceiling windows allow Swiss Farms drive-thru customers to see every product.
Drive Thru
The Swiss Farms Drive-Thru concept is not new, but arguably, it is newly popular. As consumers get busier, they continue to seek out solutions to help maximize their time. Swiss Farms Drive Thrus provide them with an opportunity to grab their groceries from their cars—something that customers greatly appreciate. “What we’re really offering is not just milk and bread,” says Paul Friel, CEO of Swiss Farms. “Our real product is the drive thru.” The Swiss Farms Drive Thrus were originally an extension of a family dairy, and their purpose was to distribute the dairy’s milk, butter,
eggs and other products. The first ten double-sided drive-thru stores were built between 1968 and 1975. They were owned and operated by the family until late 1999, when the family sold the dairy and the retail stores changed hands to a group of private equity investors, who still maintain control. The change in ownership was a catalyst for a change in the stores’ direction. “We looked at the business, at the drive-thru model, and at consumers’ demand for quicker, on-the-go food to replace traditional shopping,” Friel says. “Adding foodservice to the drivethru stores was a natural extension for all of that. It just fits today’s lifestyle.”
