Fresh Produce Spotlight
Produce merchandisers are responding to the new Let’s Move! campaign’s call for action.
by John Unrein Over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled, and today, nearly one in three children in America are overweight or obese, according to government statistics. The numbers are even higher in African American and Hispanic communities, where nearly 40% of the children are overweight or obese. One third of all children born in 2000 or later may suffer from diabetes at some point in their lives. Many others will face chronic obesity-related health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and asthma.
Let’s Move! is a new comprehensive initiative, launched by First Lady Michelle Obama, dedicated to solving the problem of obesity within a generation, so that children born today will grow up healthier and able to pursue their dreams. At the launch of the initiative, President Barack Obama signed a Presidential Memorandum creating the first-ever Task Force on Childhood Obesity to conduct a review of every single programs and policies relating to child nutrition and physical activity and develop a national action plan to maximize federal resources and set concrete benchmarks toward the First Lady’s national goal. The Task Force recommendations focus on the five pillars of the First Lady’s Let’s Move! initiative: Creating a healthy start for children Empowering parents and caregivers Providing healthy food in schools Improving access to healthy, affordable foods Increasing physical activity Instore operators are quick to respond to this call for action, and are increasingly rolling out new services for customers to pave the way for healthier lifestyles. The following are examples of supermarkets that are unveiling new campaigns that involve their fresh produce departments and health and wellness initiatives.
Safeway Pushes for Better Health
Since September 2010, Safeway has worked with a variety of celebrity athletes to successfully implement its Lunchbox Winners program. Lunchbox Winners was inspired by the Produce for Better Health Foundation’s
