A recent report by NPD Group reveals that 40% of US consumers rely on a new recipe at least once a week to make any type of dish. At Dorothy Lane Market, corporate chef Carrie Walters travels the Dayton, OH, area to demonstrate recipes and educate shoppers about the latest trends in cooking. Her cooking demonstrations are popular events on local television programs. Her creations include DLM Original Marinara Sauce, DLM Cheese Spreads and DLM Homemade Dips. The Dorothy Lane Market deli features many of her recently developed recipes such as DLM Chicken and Grape Salad, DLM Parmesan Encrusted Tilapia, DLM Bean City Salad and DLM Garlic Herb Pasta. Additionally, new culinary foods are featured at the supermarket operator’s annual Food and Wine Show, which is growing in popularity every year. Dorothy Lane, which has three stores in the Dayton area, operates its own cooking school, which offers a full slate of monthly classes. The Dorothy Lane School of Cooking features series for different levels of enthusiasts, including beginners, families and couples. Featured instructors include Marilou Suszko, who shares techniques on providing shoppers with a basic knowledge of the canning process. She covers methods of preserving foods like freezing pestos all season long. Another popular class is called Bake Sale Classics, taught by Zebbie Borland, who shares her recipes for Jumbo Kitchen Sink Cookies; Granny’s Old-fashioned Butterscotch Bars; Black-Bottom Cupcakes; and Raspberry Cheesecake Bars with Almonds.
