The Foodie Generation
Throughout the tough economy of recent years, one of the bright spots to emerge is the importance of foodies. Foodies are not gourmet snobs; they are everyday shoppers who are seeking out new and interesting foods to satisfy their cravings to learn more about the foods they consume, including more knowledge about food culture. That’s one of the many factors driving the local foods movement at retail. New research from the International Dairy-DeliBakery Association reveals a new cultural mix that is shaping the retail food market, according to IDDBA’s What’s In Store 2012 report. The burgeoning U.S. Hispanic population and single-person households are steadfast forces in the grocery aisle. Active Baby Boomers and newly empowered Millennials are also a mushrooming presence in the market. Singles are another flourishing demographic. Single-person households have tripled in the last 30 years to 27% of U.S. households, outnumbering those of married couples with children, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. And 45% of seniors are single, the Census Bureau found. For these reasons, single-serving packages and packages with fewer servings can cater to a sizeable market, according to IDDBA. Mature populations, notably active Baby Boomers, are staying in the workforce beyond retirement age. They are more active and health conscious than ever before, and seek shopping destinations that stock fresh, healthful foods. Millennials, born between 1981 and 1995, have 11% more buying power than Baby Boomers did in their youth, according to one study. They spend considerable time and effort researching prospective purchases and ferreting out deals. Millennials crave authenticity, self-expression, affordability, and quality in their product choices. Foodies fall into all of these burgeoning demographic categories. They are a force to be reckoned with, and deserve more attention from the innovative leaders of instore bakery/deli. John Unrein junrein@sosland.com
