urine can be. Every 24 hours a mouse can produce 40 to 60 droppings.
In that same time, it can produce 73,000 urine droplets.
"What if that was mold or asbestos?" Corrigan asks. "It would be taken
care of in a flash."
While that's not necessarily a food safety example, it illustrates just
how problematic rodents can be. And contrary to some popular beliefs,
the solution is not baits and traps. "That should be the No. 5 question
down the list," Corrigan says. "The best bait is strong doors and good
sanitation. Sanitation is pest control."
Corrigan notes that grocery stores are among the most susceptible
to mouse infestations, thanks to the obvious large amounts of food,
along with refuse, large doors and delivery areas. Another big factor is
warmth. Mice are drawn to warm areas, like those spaces around the
mechanical parts of open-air freezers.
He also stresses that every rodent problem can be different. "No two
streets, stores, distribution centers or food plants are alike," he says.
"Therefore no two infestations are alike."
Which can make it even harder to get a rodent problem under control.
But, Corrigan says, it is necessary.
"In food stores, you absolutely cannot afford to let the house mouse
get away from you," he says. "It can be very costly. Entrenched mouse
infestations are very difficult and very expensive."
