news ON OUR RADAR Most consumers are dining in during the week. Eighty percent of participants report eating at home at least four out of five nights, and 40 percent of consumers state that they are cooking at home more often than they were the year before. Overall, cooking at home is an enjoyable activity for 64 percent of consumers who declare either, "I love to cook," or "Cooking is my therapy." Only 9 percent express a strong dislike for the activity. Sara Vanderheyden, from an Iowa Hy-Vee location, took the top honor at the IDDBA's 21st annual cake decorating challenge. She was announced the winner at the conclusion of the June show in Houston. According to an IDDBA release, Vanderheyden never intended to be a cake decorator, but found a passion while working her get-through-college job. Nayeli Crus, with Albertsons, Vons and Pavilions, took second place while Paige Thornton, with Green Valley Marketplace, took third. The three-day contest began with creating enough production cakes to fill an eight-foot bakery case. The second day was devoted to the creation of a wedding cake. The final day saw each contestant decorate three cakes of their choosing, one from each category: special occasion, decorator's choice and the show's theme - Growing the Future. The event included a Taste of Teeter sampling, a complimentary, in-store offering of Harris Teeter's most unique products. The 50,000-squarefoot store features a number of artisan breads and a made-to-order sandwich program. Other features include a full-service Fresh Foods Market deli/bakery, sushi, self-serve olives, international cheeses, a sub sandwich shop and custom, ice cream, and wedding cakes. A study released by Culinary Visions Panel in June takes an in-depth look at the habits, challenges and interests of consumers' weeknight dining experiences and reveals nearly eight out of 10 (79 percent) of 8 * JULY 2016 * instore The study also reveals challenges consumers face when cooking at home. Thirty-eight percent state that cooking at home takes too long, while 36 percent of respondents say that if grocery shopping were easier, they would cook at home more often. Those surveyed cite frustration at having to shop at several stores to buy all the necessary ingredients for a recipe. According to a report by Nielsen, 25 percent of today's grocery shoppers buy online. Millennials polled by Retale, however, were more likely to buy groceries digitally, with 30 percent having placed orders online. Alternatively, 70 percent have not. "Millennials are digital natives," says Retale's president Pat Dermody. "It's why they're more inclined to buy online. Still, they overwhelmingly prefer to shop for groceries in-store." Forty-one percent of older millennials (ages 26-34) have ordered groceries online while only 13 percent of younger millennials (18-25) have used this service. "As you get older, you're more likely to have your own multi-person household, which increases your grocery needs and makes shopping more time consuming," says Dermody. "As a result, buying online can seem more convenient and efficient." The Kroger Co. announced the retirement of Ralphs division president Donna Giordano and the promotion of Valerie Jabbar to succeed her. Jabbar currently serves as vice-president of merchandising for Ralphs. Giordano will retire from the company after 44 years of service, effective July 23. "Donna's distinguished leadership has helped Ralphs continue to grow, serve more customers in the highly-competitive Southern California market, and help Kroger across our business," said Rodney McMullen, Kroger's chairman and CEO. "She is respected throughout the industry and among our associates for her strategic leadership and engagement in the communities we serve." STEPHANIE DECAMP consumers are interested in purchasing meal kits at their local grocery store. The study surveys over 2,100 participants and explores their attitudes toward cooking at home, with a focus on Sunday through Thursday dinners. http://www.instorebuyer.com/
