While the donut is booming when it comes to
independent retail bakeries, the sweet treat
has remained rather flat when it comes to
supermarket bakery sales.
Weekly donut sales across the United States
averaged $931 over the last 52 weeks, up just
two dollars from the previous year. That
stagnancy was seen in every region, with the
Central region - which has the largest donut
sales across the country at $1,390 - increasing
just $7 and the West region increasing $5. The
South saw an increase of just $1 while the East
saw a $1 decrease.
Donut contribution to bakery department
sales remained the same - 7.5 percent
- nationwide.
Consumers still prefer individual donuts, as
one-count sales accounted for 35.5 percent of
all donut purchases. Half-dozens accounted
for 19.3 percent while mini donuts and donut
holes accounted for 16.4 percent. Twelvecount donuts were also at 16.4 percent.
As in the previous year, sales remained
fairly even throughout the year with a slight
increase in February.
