The agreement announced last week marks the first time a leading world
automaker and a leading agribusiness company have ventured to create clean,
renewable fuels. Biodiesel reduces carbon monoxide and particulate emissions.

John Miller, a 20-year grain industry veteran who most recently worked with
Bartlett and Co., L.P., has joined The Scoular Co., based in Omaha, as managing
director of the company's emerging markets division.

The maker of par-baked frozen products said it has purchased the frozen desserts
business of Hibernia, a company in receivership since late last year. But KPMG,
Hibernia's administrator, said it could not complete the sale of another key asset.

That's the conclusion of a study published in the American Journal of Clinical
Nutrition. The study found that ready-to-eat cereal fortified with vitaman E serves
as a better delivery driver for the nutrient than encapsulated supplements.

Guest worker
program affects an
important base
When President Bush last week proposed
a major overhaul in U.S. immigration
policies by creating a "guest worker
program," the probability is that many in
grain-based foods wondered about the
potential impact on parts of this industry.
After all, the worker shortage this program
is designed to correct mainly has affected
businesses that are of central importance to
the industry.
Food service is in the forefront of those
affected by such shortages, along with
retail, including in-store baking, where
the inability to obtain workers has been
troubling. Ending this gap is one of the
major goals of what the president wants
enacted into law.
The aspect of the plan that drew the
greatest attention involves addressing
handling the 8 million (some estimates
approach 11 million) undocumented
people already in the United States. Many
of these individuals would be allowed to
apply for "guest worker" status for a threeyear period, which is renewable. "If they
have a job or one is waiting for them" is the
key definition Mr. Bush used, in declaring,
"Our laws should allow willing workers
to enter our country and fill jobs that
Americans are not filling."
Illegal workers whose status would be
set are mainly Hispanic, from Mexico.
They and the legal immigrants have been a
tremendous positive in grain-based foods,
introducing new eating patterns that have
benefited the industry. MBN
