In accepting the Milling Operative of the
Year award, Mr. Long was both surprised
and appreciative, saying that the milling
industry has been his passion.
"I want to say thanks to the people I
work with and in the industry," Mr. Long
said. "It's quite an honor. I appreciate it.
Thank you."
After receiving the award, Mr. Long told

being extremely honored by the comments
submitted to Milling & Baking News on his
behalf he was shocked, admitting that once
he realized he was being recognized as the
miller of the year he lost his train of thought
during the rest of the award presentation,
focusing only on the fact that he would
have to get up in front of hundreds of his
colleagues to accept the award.
"I could hardly talk," he said, "but I felt
very blessed to be honored in such a way."
In reflecting on his career in the milling
industry, Mr. Long said he cannot imagine
doing anything else. He credited longtime
Kansas State University milling professor
Arlin Ward with guiding him down the
right path.
"Milling is my passion," Mr. Long said.
"With the exception of family, milling is
what I really like doing. I enjoy hands-on
activities that are challenging. I don't have
any reservations about the career I chose.
"The job I have at Bay State is all I ever
wanted to do. I'm finally where I want to be.
My goal was to be a general milling superintendent and I'm very happy to be there."
While milling is a difficult career filled
with a lot of long hours, especially in the

early years of working, Mr. Long said he
was fortunate to come in contact with employers along the way who not only helped
with the learning curve, but who made the
job enjoyable. Today, Mr. Long is taking
the lessons he learned - and is still learning - and passing them along to the next
generation of millers. That task, he noted,
presents many challenges.
"Milling is a difficult industry," Mr. Long

explained. "In this day and age, it's hard to
find people who want to put the time in,
and it's a struggle to find talented people
who want to make milling their passion. If
they think of it as just a job they will never
get anywhere. We can give them the tools
to succeed, but it is up to them to follow
through. But if they are willing to give the
time, I think there is a great career out there
