Cargill AgHorizons opens third
grain elevator in Topeka
TOPEKA, KAS. - Cargill AgHorizons
earlier this month expanded its services
when it officially opened and began
accepting grain deliveries at the "Crossroads" elevator, its third grain facility in
the Topeka area.
The Crossroads elevator,
a former Farmland grain
facility, will handle corn
and soybean deliveries from
producers and country elevators during harvest. The facility has
storage capacity of 11 million bus.
Cargill AgHorizons said the new
elevator will provide extended hours
during the harvest season. Along with
the nearby Gordon and Silver Lake grain
facilities, the three Cargill AgHorizons'
elevators now offer area producers ac-

cess to as many as eight unloading pits
for grain delivery needs.
The Silver Lake grain facility has
storage capacity of 26 million bus, with
loading capacity of 18,000 bu per hour.

The Gordon facility has 24 million bus of
storage capacity and loading capacity of
35,000 bu per hour.
Based on the 2004 Grain and Milling
Annual published by Sosland Publishing
Co., Cargill, at 511,000,000 bus of grain
storage capacity, is the nation's secondlargest grain company, behind Archer

National Starch launches program to
verify non-bioengineered ingredients
BRIDGEWATER, N.J. - National Starch
has expanded its crop identity-preservation program and implemented a broader,
documented identity-tracing program to
verify that its food ingredients are not bioengineered.
The program, called Truetrace, provides
customers with traceability for National
Starch's food ingredients at all stages of
development, from seed to crop, to production and distribution. The program covers
all the company's food ingredients made
from corn grown in the United States.
National Starch said protecting corn varieties from adventitious contamination and
providing traceability has become more
challenging as farmers in the U.S. Corn Belt
have increased acreage of bioengineered
corn crops during the past few years.
Currently, bioengineered corn is grown
on between one third and one half of the
corn acreage in the Corn Belt states, and

that amount is projected to increase considerably in the next few years.
"The ability to provide fully traceable
documentation that grain grown in the
U.S. is from non-G.M. sources is becoming
increasingly more important, especially
as more regulations are implemented to
require this traceability," said Joe Emling,
manager, grain quality and traceability,
agribusiness, National Starch and Chemical Co.
Currently, E.U. regulations require food
producers of bioengineered organisms to
inform purchasers of all the stages of the
product's production and distribution.
Although E.U. laws require the traceability of bioengineered products, they do not
explicitly require traceability for non-bioengineered products.
National Starch's Truetrace program will
make information available to customers in
Europe and elsewhere who request it.

rate and the acceptance of the product by

During harvest, the Silver Lake elevator will handle corn and the Gordon
elevator will handle corn, soybeans and

Truetrace adheres to the guidelines of
the British Retail Consortium/Food and
Drinks Federation Technical Standard for
the Supply of Identity Preserved NonGenetically Modified Food Ingredients
and Products. This standard represents
the best practices available for ensuring
the proper segregation and documentation
of non-bioengineered corn and provides
for non-bioengineered identity preservation and traceability that meets or exceeds
regulations in major markets worldwide,
National Starch said.
Growers in National Starch's Truetrace
program produce non-bioengineered corn
exclusively or take special precautions to
isolate bioengineered corn from non-bioengineered corn to avoid cross-contamination.
These growers provide to National
Starch extensive documentation of their
seed varieties, field locations and equipment cleaning, which are subject to periodic audits. Corn delivered to National
Starch manufacturing facilities thus may
be traced to the original farm on which it
was grown and the seed varieties used in
production.
