bulletin to more than 20,000 restaurants and 14,000
supermarkets and food suppliers to alert them to the
dangers of trans fat, how to identify it, and how to replace trans fat with healthier options in the kitchen.
WASHINGTON - Flour production by
U.S. mills in the second quarter of 2005
totaled 96,439,000 cwts, down 334,000
cwts, or 0.3%, from 96,773,000 cwts during the second quarter of 2004. Half-year
output aggregated 192,217,000 cwts,
down 1,131,000 cwts, or 0.6%, from the
first half of 2004. Second-quarter flour production
has held within a remarkably tight range in recent
years. At 96,439,000 cwts, production compared
with 96,767,000 cwts in 2003 and 96,276,000 cwts in
2002. Flour mills operated at 85.3% of six-day capacity in the 2005 second quarter, up from 84.1% in the
second quarter last year. Wheat ground for flour in
April-June 2005 totaled 215,265,000 bus, up 750,000
from the second quarter last year. Millfeed production was 1,624,111 tons in the second quarter, down
33,121 tons from the same period in 2004.

WASHINGTON - In its first surveybased estimates for corn and soybeans,
the National Agricultural Statistics Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture estimated the 2005 U.S. corn crop at
10,349,841,000 bus, down 12% from the
record 2004 crop of 11,807,217,000 bus. The
2005 soybean crop was estimated at 2,791,133,000 bus,
down 11% from the record 2004 crop of 3,140,996,000.
All wheat production was estimated at 2,167,178,000
bus, down 2% from July but 8,933,000 above 2004.
Winter wheat outturn was estimated at 1,520,848,000
bus, down 4,454,000 bus from July. Spring wheat other
than durum was estimated at 553,375,000 bus, down
35,365,000 bus from July. Durum production was put
at 92,955,000 bus, down 1,120,000 from July.

Corn, soybean
output falls
in '05

WASHINGTON - The Economic Research Service of the U.S. Department
of Agriculture projected 2005-06 U.S.
wheat ending stocks at 634 million
bus, down 66 million bus from its July
projection but 94 million bus above the
previous year. The decrease was the result of a 41 million bus decrease in estimated 2005
wheat production and a 25 million bus increase in
exports, to 975 million bus. Total domestic use was
unchanged from July at 1,168 million bus.

WASHINGTON - Eric Hentges, director of the Center for Nutrition Policy
and Promotion of the U.S. Department
of Agriculture, said last week that the
U.S.D.A. is making strides to issue a
children's version of the food pyramid
within the next several months as well
as a Spanish language pyramid that will be available by the end of the year. In addition, he said the
U.S.D.A. has received clearance to join supermarkets and other businesses in campaigns to promote
