Nine-month flour production rises
in 10 states and declines in 4
WASHINGTON - Flour production in
10 states in the first nine months of 2005
increased over the same three quarters in
2004. Four states posted decreases from
the prior year, according to data compiled by the Bureau of the Census of the
U.S. Department of Commerce. National
output in January-September was down
0.6% from the prior year.
The North American Millers' Association provides funding to the Census Bureau in support of the compilation of these milling statistics.

other states" when adjusted for North Dakota was up 3.9% from the previous year.

Kansas production up slightly

Kansas, the leading state in flour
production, turned out 9,595,000 cwts in
July-September, up 18% from 8,128,000
in the second quarter but down 2.5%
from 9,840,000 in July-September 2004.
In second place, California and Hawaii
production totaled 7,993,000 cwts, up 8%
from 7,398,000 in April-June but down
4% from 8,330,000 in July-September
of last year. Minnesota was third for
the quarter at 6,418,000 cwts, followed by Missouri, 6,337,000; PennJan.-Sep.
2004
sylvania, 6,158,000; Ohio, 5,977,000;
and New York state, 5,915,000.

Utah, up 8.3%, followed by New York state,
7.1%; Texas, 5%; North Carolina, 3.9%;
Ohio, 2.9%; Michigan, 2.4%; Missouri, 1.9%;
Oregon and Washington, combined, 1.8%;
Iowa, 1.1%; and Pennsylvania, 0.5%.
The sharpest decrease in January-September 2005 was in Kansas, down 7.5%
from the prior year. This was followed by
California and Hawaii combined, down
6%; Minnesota, 5.5%; and Illinois, 5.4%.
The latest Census report includes
significant revisions in output previously shown in some states and in "all
other states'' for April-June 2005. With
U.S. production for April-June down
1,422,000 cwts from the previous year to
95,017,000, Missouri was down 901,000
to 5,820,000, "all other states" down
494,000 to 27,519,000, Pennsylvania down
127,000 to 5,916,000, Iowa down 22,000
to 1,668,000 and Kansas down 4,000
to 8,128,000. Texas was up 126,000 to
4,498,000. Production for other states was
unchanged from the prior report. In addition, U.S. 24-hour capacity for April-June
was up 25,858 cwts to 1,494,619. Accounting for most of this, "all other states" was
up 23,858 to 403,492, Texas 1,500 to 71,800
and Michigan 500 to 30,500. Capacity for
other states remained unchanged.
Because of these changes, Milling &
Baking News now shows total U.S. sixday rate of grind for April-June at 82.6%,
down from 85.3% in the prior report. In
addition, indicated rate of grind for "all
other states" is 88.6%, down sharply from
95.8%. Iowa was 82%, down from 83.1%;
Michigan, 69.7%, down 70.8%; Missouri,
75.5%, down from 87.2%; Pennsylvania,
84.9%, down from 86.7%; and Texas,
81.4%, up from 80.8%. MBN

across the entire protein scale , springs unchanged , choice milling hard amber
durum flat , and soft red mill bids mostly steady. Bakery flour bookings
maintained their sluggish pace. Wheat futures price changes we re mixed.
C. C. C. sets flour tenders for next week. Milifeed prices were irregular.
