Dairy Products
Butter prices continued to decline as
production outpaced demand. Inventories were building. As of Dec. 31, there
were 57,060,000 lbs of butter in cold storage, up 27% from a year earlier, the U.S.
Department of Agriculture said. MBN
Dry milk products, butter and cheese
prices were mostly lower last week as
heavier-than-expected production of most
products exceeded only fair demand.
Whey protein concentrate (34%) prices
were 1½c a lb lower as offers increased.
Buyers held off in the weak market. Production was steady, but stocks were balanced to heavy. Dry buttermilk prices
remained weak. Production was heavy,
demand light and stocks heavy.
Low- and medium-heat nonfat dry
milk prices were 2@6c a lb lower as production remained heavy in all regions
and both domestic and export demand
waned. Users hesitated to buy in a declining market. High-heat prices weakened with those of other classes. Demand
was only fair, but stocks remained light.
The exception was whey powder, which
was ½c a lb higher. Production was up,
and ideas were prices were near their top.
Stocks were light. Domestic and export demand remained good. Lactose prices were
firm as supplies remained tight.
Cash cheese prices were mostly lower.
Production was higher than expected,
and buying interest was fair at best.
Egg Products
Egg product prices were mostly lower
last week. Trading was slow. Many from
the industry were at last week's annual
International Poultry Exposition in Atlanta. Breaking stock prices declined
2@3c a dozen, and supplies were ample
for light demand.
Dried whole eggs were 5c a lb lower,
and yolks and blends steady to weak on
light to moderate demand. The exception was dried whites, which gained 5c a
lb and were up 20c for the month. Dried
white prices have gained 65c, or 33%,
since last summer's low of $2 a lb.
Frozen and liquid products were mostly
lower, with yolks down 2c a lb and other
products steady to lower. Demand was
only moderate for ample offers of most
products. Total frozen eggs in storage on
Dec. 31 totaled 21,019,000 lbs, up 10% from
a year earlier, according to the U.S.D.A.
Frozen whites were down 9%, yolks up
23%, whole and mixed up 17%. MBN

Cocoa
The price range for cash cocoa powder narrowed last week, although trading
remained slow and prices nominally unchanged. Some interest in booking cocoa
for the last half of 2006 and the first quarter of 2007 was noted.
New York cocoa futures were sharply
lower as commodity funds sold after an
uneasy calm returned to the Ivory Coast. MBN
