THOMASVILLE, GA. - The board of directors of Flowers Foods last week raised
the company's dividend 25% to 12.5c per
share from 10c per share. The dividend
is payable on June 30 to shareholders
of record as of June 16. "Our business is
generating substantial cash flow, our balance sheet is strong, and our operating strengths are
evident in our performance," said George E. Deese,
chairman, president and chief executive officer.

NEW YORK - A concerted effort to tap
into synergies between the meat and
baking businesses of Sara Lee Corp. was
described last week by Brenda Barnes,
chief executive officer. Speaking at the
Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. Strategic Decisions Conference, Ms. Barnes offered
a tongue-in-cheek observation about the realization
that baked foods and meat products are complementary. "We had an amazing discovery," she said.
"If you have bread and you have meat, you can
make a sandwich." Ms. Barnes said Sara Lee had
never conducted a bread and meat joint promotion.
Over Memorial Day weekend, stand-alone bread
displays were placed near refrigerated Sara Lee deli
meats. "This simple cross-promotion really was not
possible before we brought these companies (meat
and baking) together since they did not talk to each
other," she said. "In fact, we had our bread company doing peanut butter and jelly tie-ins, not our
own company meat tie-in."

WASHINGTON - Extensive reviews
of legislative issues facing the baking
industry and an update about allergens
were presented at a meeting last week
of the Food Technical Affairs Regulatory
Committee of the American Bakers Association. The FTRAC met May 31-June
1 at A.B.A. headquarters in Washington. Barbara
O. Schneeman, who leads the Office of Nutritional
Products, Labeling and Dietary Supplements in the
Food and Drug Administration's Center for Food
Safety and Applied Nutrition, provided an update
on food labeling. The group was also addressed by
Audrae Erickson, president of the Corn Refiners Association. Ms. Erickson discussed prevailing myths
about high-fructose corn syrup, and she shared scientific research that debunks the misconceptions.
Allergen presentations were offered by Steve Taylor, University of Nebraska Food Allergy Research
and Resource Program, Institute of Agriculture and
Natural Resources.
