Dry milk product prices were mostly
unchanged last week, except lactose, up
1c a lb; buttermilk, up 5c, and nonfat dry
milk mixed. Milk supply remained ample
but was showing seasonal declines in select areas.
Higher third-quarter contract prices for
lactose continued to be reported by the
U.S. Department of Agriculture. Demand
surpassed supply, and some producers
were unable to deliver contracted orders.
Dry buttermilk prices jumped on strong
domestic and export demand. Seasonal
demand from ice cream manufacturers
was noted, but bakers also were more interested buyers. At the same time, production eased in most areas as more cream
went to ice cream makers.
Dry whey prices were firm and stocks
were tightening. Domestic demand was
steady. Export interest was stronger. Production was beginning to decline seasonally in some regions. Whey protein concentrate was unchanged, with production
expected to decline seasonally.
Nonfat dry milk prices were mixed,
with high-heat product steady to firm and
low- and medium-heat steady to 1c a lb

lower. Stocks varied by region and by producer within regions. Production was expected to decline seasonally in most areas.
Demand was mixed.
Although butter production declined as
more cream went to make ice cream, butter prices moved still lower on pressure
from large inventories and fair demand.
Cash cheese prices continued to weaken
amid light demand. More products were
offered on the spot market. Stocks remained large. MBN
Egg Products
Egg product prices were mixed last
week, with whole egg mostly lower and
whites higher. Trading was slow and was
expected to be even slower during the holiday week. Breaking stock and graded egg
prices continued to decline amid ample
supplies. Nest runs were off 2c a dozen last
week and were down 11c since early June.
Dried whole egg was 5c a lb lower,
whites 5c higher and yolks and blends
unchanged. Dried white supplies were
tight, but other items were available. Some
buyers held off, waiting to see if breaking
stock prices would drop further.
Frozen whole egg was down 1c a lb,
whites and salted yolks up 1c and sugared
yolks steady. Liquid whole egg was off 3c
a lb, yolks down 1c and whites steady. MBN
Cocoa
Trading of cocoa powder and cocoa butter was slow last week. Prices were unchanged. Buyers were expected to maintain
their level of coverage for a few more weeks
before adding to 2007. New York cocoa futures hit five-month highs on speculative
fund activity. World cocoa producing areas were quiet. MBN
