Nabisco Holdings Corp. last week announced an extensive restructuring plan that would cut 4,200 jobs and eliminate about 14% of its
products, resulting in pre-tax charges of $509 million in the second
quarter, which ended June 30.
BAB Holdings, Inc., franchiser of 131 Big Apple Bagel stores in 26
states, on June 28 announced it had signed a letter of intent to acquire Chesapeake Bagel Bakery, which operates 142 stores.
The Quaker Oats Co., the fourth-largest U.S. breakfast cereal
producer, said last week it would "maintain its position as the
value leader among major name-brand cereal manufacturers" by
cutting breakfast cereal prices and expanding its line of valuepriced bagged cereals.
Share prices of Manhattan Bagel Co., Inc. dropped 35% - to $13¾
from $21¼ - after the company announced it had discovered accounting irregularities at its West coast subsidiary.
Fresh Start Bakeries, Inc.; Klosterman Baking Co.; and Cordia
Inc., a McDonald's Corp. franchisee, will build a 50,000-squarefoot bakery in Dickson, Tenn., that will produce hamburger buns
exclusively for McDonald's restaurants, according to the Dickson
County Chamber of Commerce.
Kansas City Southern Industries, the parent of Kansas City Southern Railway Co., last week confirmed it was bidding for the Chihuahua Pacific railroad line, the first of five segments of the Mexican
national rail system to be auctioned off to private ownership.

Kurt Preuss, executive vice-president of the Basic Foods Division of
Mallinckrodt, Inc., was honored at a retirement dinner June 22 at the
Beach Point Club, Mamaroneck, N.Y.
The presidential candidates of the Democratic and Republican parties will be invited to address the annual convention of the American Bakers Association, Sept. 12-16 in Washington, Robert J. Wager,

The Arkansas Milling Co. has been incorporated in Arkadelphia,
Ark., by T.R. Van Boskerck.

Grain Division of Continental Grain Co., based
in New York, last week
began a major expansion/renovation project
at its East St. Louis
grain elevator.

Dale C. Putnam has resigned as president
of Metz Baking Co., Sioux City, Iowa, to join
Interstate Brands Corp., Kansas City, as chief
operating officer.
The American Bakers Association has petitioned the Food and Drug Administration
for the establishment of new common and
usual names for certain ingredients in baked
Putnam
foods that will be included in ingredient declarations for the first time in 1978, when new
standards of identity for baked foods become effective.

Drouth conditions of calamitous proportions
over virtually the whole of the American
Northwest spelled almost a disaster for the
spring wheat crop.

The Cargill Crop Bulletin of July 8 added, "The agricultural situation in the spring wheat area of the North American continent has
become critical. Day after day, with temperatures hovering around
the 100-degree mark, many sections reporting 110 and some as
high as 120 degrees, and week after week with no rain to relieve
the situation, much of the small grain in this normally fertile territory has been ruined."
The proposal to establish a government wheat office in France continues to cause much anxiety among the interests concerned. MBN
