National Association of Wheat Growers. "We have
agreed to develop a vision and strategy around four
specific areas," said Guy Shoemaker, NAMA chairman and president of Horizon Milling L.L.C. The
four areas to be explored are research, domestic competitiveness, public policy and land use and export
competitiveness. "We have a lot of work to do," Mr.
Shoemaker added. In addition to NAWG and NAMA,
the group of 60 participants included input companies, transportation companies, exporters, bakers and
others. The summit divided into four subgroups that
discussed each of the research topics. "One of the biggest areas is farm programs and how those might be
crafted to work better for the wheat industry," said
Dale Shuler, NAWG president and a Carter, Mont.,
wheat producer. "We also discussed research into the
development of new varieties with traits that benefit
not only producers but processors and end users.
Export markets account for a significant portion of
wheat production, so it is important."
HATTIESBURG, MISS. - USA Yeast and
Minn-Dak Yeast Co. will exchange technical information and offer production backup to each other in an alliance, Mike Lavallee, president of USA Yeast, said late last
week. The companies serve different geographical areas, Mr. Lavallee said. Based in
Hattiesburg, USA Yeast serves the Southeast, Texas and
parts of the lower Midwest. Mr. Lavallee and a group of
investors organized USA Yeast in 2003 to manufacture
and sell bakers yeast. Minn-Dak, based in Wahpeton,
N.D., supplies fresh yeast marketed under the Dakota
brand name to the baking industry. "The sharing of production and efficiency techniques should be beneficial
to both companies," Mr. Lavallee said. "The alliance, essentially, is to better serve our customers."

WINNIPEG, MAN. - Agricore United,
in the third quarter ended July 31, posted
net income of C$56,014,000 ($50,118,000),
up 16% from C$48,287,000 in the third
quarter of the prior year. Sales were
C$1,177,500,000 ($1,053,575,000), up from
C$1,021,300,000 in the prior year third
quarter. "The results in our grain segment are certainly the best we've seen in recent years, and we're beginning to capture the benefit of our tremendous operating leverage," said Brian Hayward, chief executive
officer. "Since our costs are relatively fixed, just a 12%
improvement in grain shipments this year translated
directly into an 87% improvement in grain operating
income." Grain Handling earnings before interest
and taxes was C$25,415,000, up more than 107% from
C$12,272,000 in the third quarter last year.

DALLAS - Corner Bakery Cafe, a 90unit fast-casual bakery cafe acquired
earlier this year by Il Fornaio (America)
Corp., has named James D. Vinz president. In addition, he will remain chief
operating officer of the company. Mr.
Vinz joined Corner Bakery Cafe in 1995
as a multiunit director. He was promoted to regional
director in 1997 and vice-president of operations in
1998. Under his direction, the brand grew from five
