Members of Harvest States Cooperatives, St. Paul, Minn., have approved a plan aimed at giving the coopertative new channels for
raising capital while also allowing its members to invest directly in
value-added ventures managed by Harvest States.

Highly attractive publicity in the form of toasted sandwich posters is being distributed by the Wheat Flour Institute of the Millers'
National Federation as its latest contribution in the campaign to increase consumption of bread and flour.

Saying bagels will add to its menu of convenience breakfast foods,
The Kellogg Co. agreed last week to acquire Lender's Bagels from
Kraft Foods Inc., Northfield, Ill., for $455 million.

Announcements of details of the plans of the Soft Wheat Millers'
Association to conduct a campaign to increase the consumption of
soft wheat flour was made in Nashville last week by W.H. Strowd,
secretary of the organization.

Randy Marten, principal of Food Ingredient
Advisors, St. Louis, in a long-term consulting
agreement.
Red Star Yeast & Products, Milwaukee, a division of Universal Foods Corp., named Ric Mercuri as vice-president of sales and marketing.
Campbell Soup Co. last week announced

Bond of Oklahoma Baking Co., a newly-formed independent baking company, has purchased baking plants of General Host Corp. at
Oklahoma City and Enid, Okla., and at Hutchinson, Kas.
A U.S. District Court judge in Philadelphia has ruled that the acquisition by Mrs. Smith's Pie Co. of Lloyd J. Harriss Pie Co. and affiliates in 1973 violated federal antitrust law.
President-elect Jimmy Carter intends to replace former Secretary of
Agriculture Butz's "policy of plenty, plenty of risk for the American
farmer," with "a policy of plenty with protection - all-out production, but with a solid floor, not a shaky foundation." This was the major message in an
address by Mr. Carter's principal agricultural
adviser, P.R. (Bobby) Smith of Winder, Ga., to
a meeting of the National Association of State
Departments of Agriculture in Phoenix.
Thomas J. Lee has been named vice-president
and general manager of the Procurement Division at General Mills, Inc., succeeding Darryl J. Woodland, who is retiring after more
than 37 years with the company.

One of the most extensive mill plant improvement programs in the
country is now being carried forward in Houston by the Houston
Milling Co., of which Henry H. Cate is president and general manager. Since the property was acquired by the present ownership in
July of this year, approximately $140,000 has been spent for modernization and additions to the plant.
Wheat and flour trade was in substantially better volume on English markets this week as a result of the uneasy political situation,
including fears of the spread of the war in Spain and the further
advance in prices.
It is stated at the Department of Labor that flour is not classed as a
perishable product under the provision of the Walsh-Healy Act and
is therefore subject to that law. A report that flour has been classed
as a perishable product was recently circulated in error.
An English miller, recognized as a dean of the milling industry, with
a "waggish" reputation among his milling friends, formulated special rules and regulations for a golf match to be played between
London millers and bakers. It has been suggested that similar arrangements might apply in this country in golf matches between
millers and flour buyers:
1 - Any miller endeavoring to sell flour to an opponent will lose
the hole.
2 - Any miller succeeding in selling flour to an opponent will lose the
match, and profit (if any) will be forfeit to the Millers' Benevolent.
3 - Any baker asking his opponent his opinion of the wheat market
will lose two strokes.
4 - Any miller attempting a forecast of the market will be bound
over in his own recognizance.
5 - Any miller forecasting the market accurately will be deemed to
have holed in one, and will pay the appropriate penalty - and the
wine steward.
6 - Subject to the provisions of Rule 13 hereof, any competitor telling or communicating more than one story, joke, wisecrack or whatnot per hole will be disqualified.
7 - Any baker referring to the competition as a "terrible grind" or
any miller retorting that his opponent is a "loafer" will be shot.
8 - Millers laying their opponents' stymies may be referred to as "offal,"
but are not to be addressed as such. Penalty (probably), a thick ear.
9 - It is the condition of the match that the winners "bag the dough"
for their own charity.
10 - Competitors losing by 10 and 8 (or worse) may be treated as
wormcasts.
11 - No competitor may begin the afternoon round until after a reasonable interval has elapsed since lunch, to allow for natural evaporation.
12 - Any competitor completing the course in less than the par
score fixed by the local golfers' association (hereinafter called "undercutting") shall forthwith have his supply of golf balls stopped,
subject to appeal to the Royal and Ancient.
13 - The compiler of these presents shall, in recognition thereof, be
deemed to have won his match (which is about his only chance). MBN
