Dry milk product prices were steady
to higher last week, while butter was
unchanged and cheese mixed. Supplies
of milk to dryers increased over the holiday week because of school closings, but
not as much as expected. Supply still
was insufficient for demand.
Contract negotiations for 2007 were
wrapping up for some products, the U.S.
Department of Agriculture reported. But
some producers and buyers were reluctant to contract under the current tight
supply situation of most products.
Nonfat dry milk (N.D.M.) prices were
firm to 2½c a lb higher last week. Production increased slightly in some regions
but still fell short of demand. Inventories, especially of high heat N.D.M.,
were tight. Resale prices were well above
levels directly from producers.
Whey protein concentrate (34%) prices were 1c a lb higher last week. Supplies were short, and some deliveries on
contract were not being completed. Spot
material was not available.
Prices of dry whey, buttermilk and
lactose were firm last week. Supplies of
all products were tight.
Cheese prices were mixed, with cheddar barrel prices sharply lower. Demand
was slow to develop after the holiday
as buyers assessed inventories. Low-fat
cheese makers continued to struggle because of a lack of ingredients.
Butter prices held steady with good
demand noted over the holiday. MBN
Egg Products
Prices of dried egg products, frozen
eggs and liquid eggs were mostly lower
last week. Breaking stock and graded

egg prices also began to decline. For
most products, it was the first sign of
weakness since mid-October.
Dried yolks and blends were 5c a
lb lower. Whites and whole eggs were
unchanged. Trading increased from
Thanksgiving week but still was only
fair. Some processors said breaking stock
still was hard to buy at quoted prices,
while others noted some increase in
availability. Lower graded egg prices last
week should begin to discourage movement of breaking stock to retail outlets.
Frozen egg products were 1c a lb lower. Liquid whole egg was down 2c, with
whites unchanged and yolks up 1c. MBN
Cocoa
Cash cocoa prices were unchanged last
week in quiet trading. New York cocoa futures prices moved to three-week highs on
a weak U.S. dollar and speculative buying.
Arrival of cocoa beans at Ivory Coast
ports from Oct. 1 through Nov. 26 were
about 33% behind a year ago, trade
reports said. Political tensions in the
world's largest cocoa bean growing
country escalated but appeared to have
little impact on the market. MBN
