A.B.A. seeks clarification
of term 'natural'
WASHINGTON - While generally supportive of existing
definitions of the term "natural," the American Bakers Association has urged the U.S.
Department of Agriculture to
clarify the meaning of "minimally processed," an expression
that is part of the existing definition. The Food Safety and Inspection Service of the U.S.D.A.
is seeking comments about the
definition of natural in reference
to meat products, but Lee Sanders, A.B.A. senior vice-president, government relations and
public affairs, offered comments
because of how a U.S.D.A. definition could affect how the Food
and Drug Administration interprets and applies the term to
baked foods. Ms. Sanders asked
the U.S.D.A. to eliminate the
term "minimally processed" or

define it in a way that is not "unfair and un-scientific."

Wheat, corn, soy
stocks unchanged
WASHINGTON - In its March
World Agricultural Supply and
Demand Estimates, the U.S.
Department of Agriculture left
unchanged from February its
projections for 2006-07 wheat,
corn and soybean carryover,
supply and use. Projected all
wheat carryover on June 1, 2007,
was unchanged at 472 million
bus. Also unchanged were total
supply at 2,498 million bus, domestic use at 1,151 million and
exports at 875 million. Wheat by
class carryover was unchanged,
with hard winter at 167 million
bus, hard spring at 134 million,
soft red at 100 million, white at
46 million and durum at 26 million. Corn carryover on Sept. 1,
2007, was unchanged at 752 million bus. Total 2006-07 supply
was unchanged at 12,512 million
bus, domestic use at 9,510 million and exports at 2,250 million.
Projected soybean carryover on
Sept. 1, 2007, was unchanged at
a record 595 million bus. Supply
was projected at 3,642 million
bus, crush at 1,780 million and
exports at 1,100 million.

Most C.R.P. acres
to re-enroll
WASHINGTON - An estimated 23.9 million acres out
of 28 million acres of eligible
Conservation Reserve Program
contracts set to expire between
2007 and 2010 are expected
to be re-enrolled, Secretary of
Agriculture Mike Johanns said
last week. Of the 4.1 million
acres that will exit the C.R.P.
between 2007 and 2010, approximately 1.4 million acres
are located in major corn producing states. "The percentage of landowners choosing to
remain in C.R.P. is consistent
with what we have seen in
the past, despite speculation
that re-enrollment would drop
significantly due to high corn
