Dairy Products
Prices of select dry dairy products
continued to advance last week.
Lactose prices jumped 7c a lb on
strong demand and steady production,
with some product trading well above
the quoted range. Quarterly contracted
prices were higher for the April-June period. "Buyers and sellers are uncertain of
price, supply availability and demand
for the duration of 2007," the U.S. Department of Agriculture said.
Prices of 34% whey protein concentrate
gained 5c a lb, with strong demand from
the food sector driving prices higher even
as production increased in some areas.
Nonfat dry milk (N.D.M.) prices were
firm to 2c a lb higher, although the top
end of some price ranges rose even higher as buyers paid premiums to secure
product. Demand for high-heat N.D.M
was strong and increasing. Supplies were
tight. More users were turning to condensed skim milk in place of low- and
medium-heat N.D.M. because of light offers and high prices of dry product.
Dry buttermilk prices were firm in the
Central and East but higher in the West.
Production decreased. Buyers were concerned about supply for the summer.
Whey prices were steady. Production
increased. Trading was slow.
Butter prices held steady. Demand
was strong for Easter/Passover, but production remained heavy.
Cheese prices were mostly lower due
to increased production. MBN
Egg Products
A steady tone prevailed in egg products
last week amid only moderate trading. In
dried products, the whole egg price eased
Dairy products
3c a lb, with other items unchanged. Frozen product was firm to 1c a lb up, and
liquid eggs were steady. Some pointed to
a softening in table egg prices, although
breaking stock was unchanged.
The current wide spread between table egg and breaking stock prices again
discouraged processing in the past week,
although units indicated they would resume full production in the coming week
to meet special pre-holiday orders.
Buyers mainly were cautious on forward coverage. Some of the trade anticipated price declines after the Easter/
Passover holidays, commonplace in past
years, but others questioned the extent
of the prospective declines. MBN
Cocoa
Cocoa powder pricing finished unchanged even as futures soared to levels
close to four-year highs. New weakness
in the U.S. dollar as well as speculative
activity was mainly responsible. Activity
was limited. Some buyers showed interest in 2008 coverage at prices equal to
current contracts. While some sales extended into the first part of the year, extensive coverage mostly was absent. MBN
