Dairy Products
Dairy product prices were mostly
steady to lower last week as supplies of
most products continued to build. Cheese
prices were higher. Butter prices declined.
Nonfat dry milk (N.D.M.) prices were
steady to 2c a lb lower. Price ranges continued to narrow. Production remained
above year-ago levels as more milk was
available than expected, although milk
supplies should begin to tighten as schools
reopen. Production of high-heat N.D.M.
increased in some areas, although supplies
still were tight. Low- and medium-heat
N.D.M. were more readily available.
Prices of dry whey, 34% whey protein
concentrate and lactose declined. Whey
production was heavier than expected. Offers were heavier, and demand
was weaker. Stocks continued to build.
Stocks of whey protein concentrate varied from balanced to heavy. Offers were
ample and demand weaker, especially
from the feed sector. Lactose production
was steady. Inventories were heavy. Offers were ample. Demand was only fair,
with lighter export interest noted.
Dry buttermilk prices were unchanged, but the price range narrowed.
Production remained strong. Inventories

grew. Competition from ice cream makers for condensed buttermilk was seasonally declining, allowing more to go to
dryers. Trading was slow. Demand was
declining as less dry buttermilk was being used as a substitute for N.D.M.
Butter prices remained firm despite
growing inventories from heavier-thanexpected production as the result of largerthan-anticipated summer milk supplies.
Domestic demand was light to moderate.
Cheese prices were mostly higher,
with improved seasonal demand noted
for cheddar and mozzarella as schools
prepared to reopen. Offers were fair. MBN
Egg Products
Egg product prices were steady to
higher last week, even as breaking stock
prices dropped. Graded egg prices broke
sharply after a recent run-up, but breakers followed with only modest declines.
Breaking stock supplies were becoming
more available.
Prices of dried whole eggs gained 5c
a lb. Dried whites were up 3c, and dried
yolks and blends were unchanged. Inventories of dried products were tight.
Trading was mixed, with some processors reporting strong sales and others
indicating slow activity.
Liquid and frozen product prices were
unchanged but with a firm undertone. MBN
Cocoa
Cash cocoa markets were quiet. Prices
were unchanged. Cocoa futures at the
New York Board of Trade fell to threemonth lows last week as speculative selling continued. The weak U.S. dollar also
contributed, as did good rainfall in West
Africa ahead of main cocoa crop harvest,
which will begin in a few weeks. MBN
