tortilla plant in Birmingham,
England.

ConAgra Flour Milling Co.
plans to build a new flour
mill in Southern California.
While the exact site of the
mill has yet to be determined,
the company last week said
the facility would be completed by the summer of 1999.
Shares of American Italian
Pasta Co. climbed 18% in the
first day of trading as a publicly-traded company.

In dedicating the company's
first U.S. pasta plant and durum mill, now under construction, executives of Barilla S.p.A.
last week reaffirmed the Italian
company's objective of becoming the top-selling pasta brand
in the United States. Joining
Guido Barilla, center, chairman

Artzt, executive director.
Danone Group last week approved the sale of part of the
grocery division operations,
including pasta businesses in
France and Italy.
In its first expansion outside

de C.V. last week announced

The 1977 Baking Industry
Exposition attracted 18,000
persons during its six-day
showing Oct. 8-13 at the Atlantic City Convention Hall.
The Exposition broke all
records for attendance, number of exhibitors and display
space utilized.
A reorganization of the U.S.
Department of Agriculture

that will reduce the total
number of its agencies from
40 to 26 was announced last
week by Secretary of Agriculture Bob Bergland.
H.N. (Weinie) Weinstein,
86, one of the best known of
America's flour sales representatives to baking, died
Oct. 9 at his home in New
York. Better known even in
baking than in milling, Mr.
Weinstein was a founder of
the Allied Trades of the Baking Industry and had the
record for longest unbroken string of attendance at
A.T.B.I. meetings.
Ranks Hovis McDougall Ltd.
has conditionally agreed to
buy the business and certain
assets of Ravarino & Freschi,
Inc., a St. Louis-based producer of pasta and other Italian foods.
Full steam ahead on participation by British milling
and baking companies in the
U.S. breadstuffs market is
indicated by development in
recent days. In the past week,
one of the "Big Three" in British milling and baking, Spillers Ltd., announced its entry
into the U.S. market through
an agreement in principle to
acquire Modern Maid Food
Products, Inc. of Garden City,
N.Y.
Arnold/Oroweat has acquired Holsum (Hawaii)
Baking, Inc., a wholly-owned
subsidiary of Ward Foods,
Inc., New York.

1937
Euclid T. Fant, long a ranking
figure in the milling industry
of Texas, died at his home in
Sherman, Texas, Oct. 7 after
an illness of about 10 days.
Mr. Fant for some years had
been a director of the Tex-OKan Flour Mills Co.
That the Canadian Wheat
Board policy of selling wheat
starting in December 1935 was
the best policy and still appears
so was the assertion of James R.
Murray, former chairman of the
board, in testifying last week
before the Turgeon grain inquiry commission in Winnipeg.
Harold G. Moulton, president
of the Brookings Institution in
Washington, one of the country's foremost economists,
will be heard on the Allied
Trades of the Baking Industry
program during the American
Bakers' Association's convention in the Municipal Auditorium at Kansas City Oct. 26.
The Supreme Court denied
the General Baking Co. of
New York a review of a federal circuit court decision that
held that its trademark, "Bond
Bread" had not been infringed
by Goldblatt Bros., Inc., large
department store organization. The suit was based on the
fact that Goldblatt Bros. were
marketing "Goldblatt's Bond
Bread" in the Chicago area, a
territory that allegedly is not
occupied by the General
