THOMASVILLE, GA. - Flowers Foods, Inc. has reached a
tentative agreement to purchase
land in Bardstown, Ky., to build
a 200,000-square-foot bakery.
"Bardstown is strategically located at the northern part of
our current market territory for
our fresh baked foods, and this
bakery will help serve new markets as we expand northward,"
said George E. Deese, president,
chairman and chief executive officer. Flowers Foods plans to buy
30 acres from the Bardstown Industrial Development Corp. and
Nelson Fiscal Court. The new
facility is expected to open with
one production line in the fall
of 2008. The company plans to
produce fresh breads and buns
for markets in Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana. Flowers Foods anticipates investing
about $52 million in the new facility over the next two years.

ORRVILLE, OHIO - For the
second quarter ended Oct. 31,
net income for The J.M. Smucker
Co. was $50,166,000, equal to 88c
per share on the common stock,
up 10% from $45,569,000, or
80c per share, during the same
quarter of the previous year. The
performances of Uncrustables,
peanut butter and fruit spreads
led to a 10% increase in secondquarter net sales for the company's U.S. retail market segment.
Net sales in the consumer and

baking strategic business area
increased 38%, but excluding
the $69.8 million contribution
from Eagle Family Foods Holdings, Inc., acquired earlier in the
year, the increase was 3%.

NEW YORK - New products
have executives at PepsiCo, Inc.

at the Morgan Stanley Global
Consumer and Retail Conference Nov. 14 in New York, John
Compton, chief executive officer of PepsiCo Americas Foods,
said Flat Earth chips have posted strong repeat scores and are
on track to rank as one of the top

Quaker Simple Harvest hot cereal, has performed so well that
the company intends to extend

more than 700 entries, a sandwich called Ants Hiding in

been selected as the winner of
the Grain Foods Foundation's

smart snacking contest. The
competition was a partnership
between the foundation and the
Food Network's Robin Miller
and sought to find the healthiest grain-based snack. "When
I gave my six-year-old the traditional 'ants on a log,' which
is celery smeared with cream
cheese and topped with a line
of raisins, she asked me to use
her favorite bread instead," said
Brenda Salveson, the winning
contestant. Ms. Salveson's prize
is a personal chef for two weeks
who will grocery shop, prepare
