states, down in three
WASHINGTON - Flour production in
eight states in 2007 increased over 2006,
while three states registered decreases,
according to preliminary data from the
Census Bureau of the U.S. Department of
Commerce. State production for the year
is based on quarterly output reports.
With only a small lead, Kansas, the
ranking producing state, recorded a 1.5%
decrease, while the second "state," a
grouping of Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin, was without a comparison with 2006.
The next five states, Minnesota, Missouri,
Ohio, Pennsylvania and North Dakota,
each recorded gains. Kansas output,
which was down sharply in 2005, posted
only a small gain in 2006.
California, formerly grouped with Hawaii, does not yet show an annual total for
2007 as the result of the state reporting revision implemented by the Census Bureau
early in the year. In order to protect confidentiality for individual mills, the Census
Bureau issued no California data for the
first quarter. Hawaii is now included in the
"all other" category. In the output reports
for the second through the fourth quarters
of 2007, California was in third place after
Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin.
The New York and New Jersey grouping,
which formerly was New York state alone,
was not included for similar reasons.
The North American Millers' Association provides funding to the Census Bureau in support of the compilations of
these quarterly milling statistics.

taled 417,574,000 cwts, up 4.4% from
399,860,000 in 2006. Mills in all the states
for which the Census Bureau does not issue separate reports - to avoid disclosure
of individual company data - produced
in 2007 a combined total of 8,459,000 cwts,
or 2% of the national total. As a result of
recent revisions, "all other" now includes
only Arizona, Hawaii, Maine and Massachusetts. It clearly was not comparable
with a year ago when the Census reported 113,331,000 cwts in "all other states"
for 2006, or 28.7% of the national total.
As noted above, Kansas in 2007 ranked
first among states in flour production, at
34,725,000 cwts, down 1.5% from 35,264,000
in 2006. Kansas produced 34,767,000 cwts
in 2005 and 36,629,000 cwts in 2004.
Kansas on 2007 accounted for 8.3% of
national flour production, down from
8.8% in both 2006 and 2005; it was 9.3% in
2004, 8.9% in 2003 and unchanged from
8.8% in 2002. The 2007 share for Kansas
flour output was the smallest in recent
history and contrasts with the peak of
13% in 1977 when the state's mills produced 35,769,000 cwts.
The Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin
state-grouping came in second in 2007,
turning out 32,682,000 cwts, or 7.8% of
the total. There are no comparisons.
Minnesota ranked third among states
or state groupings for which data were
available (fourth in most of the quarterly
reports), turning out 30,208,000 cwts, up
an amazing 11.5% from 27,102,000 in 2006.
It was only 25,063,000 in 2005. Minnesota's

Wheat grind in October-December
amounted to 235,096,000 bus, up 3.6%
from 226,835,000 in the fourth quarter of 2006. It was down 1.5% from
238,605,000 in July-September. Wheat
grind for the quarter was the seventh
largest. The record was 247,738,000 in
October-December 2000.
The extraction rate in October-December, as calculated by Milling & Baking News, was 75.6%, down from 76%
in July-September but up from 74.5%
in October-December 2005.
Millfeed production in October-December totaled 1,798,484 tons, a gain
of 4.7% from 1,717,809 in the fourth
quarter of 2006. It was down 3.9%
from 1,871,055 in July-September. MBN

share of national output in 2007 was 7.2%,
up from 6.8% in 2006 and 6.3% in 2005.
Missouri mills were in fifth place in
2007, producing 27,199,000 cwts, which
would represent an increase of 28.8% over
21,115,000 cwts reported by the Census Bureau for 2006. This compares with 22,464,000
reported in 2005 and 25,645,000 cwts in 2004.
A revision of the 2006 data for Missouri is
expected in the annual summary to be issued in May. Missouri mills accounted for
6.5% of the aggregate in 2007, up from 5.3%
indicated for 2006 and 5.7% in 2005.
Ohio mills in 2007 ranked sixth, turning out 24,436,000 cwts, up 2.2% from
23,909,000 in 2006; it was 22,700,000 in
2005. Mills in Ohio turned out 5.9% of the
national total, down from 6% in 2006.
Pennsylvania mills in 2007 were in seventh place. Production was 23,791,000
cwts, up 5.8% from 22,495,000 in 2006. It
compared with 24,259,000 in 2005. Pennsylvania mills in 2007 accounted for 5.7%
of the U.S. total, up from 5.6% in 2006.
North Dakota mills were in eighth,
producing 20,244,000 cwts, up 4.7% from
19,331,000 in 2006. This state accounted
for 4.8% of the national total in both 2007
and 2006.
Leading in 2007 output increases over
2006 was Missouri, 28.8%, a figure that could
be reduced sharply with the prospective adjustment in May. Other states with increases
from 2006 were Minnesota, at 11.5%; Michigan, 9.1%; Pennsylvania, 5.8%; North Carolina, 5.3%; North Dakota, 4.7%; Washington
and Oregon, 4.5%; and Ohio, 2.2%.
The sharpest output decrease was in
Utah, down 4.7%, followed by Kansas,
1.5% and Texas, 0.1%.
