Bars and Healthy Snacks

Kellogg, with Nutri-Grain Bars achieving dollar sales of
$110,242,400 on unit sales of 38,098,450.
But that growth is only part of a larger emphasis at Kellogg on expanding its snacks business
both in the United States and globally.
The company earlier this year acquired
Navigable Foods in China and United
Bakers in Russia. Both acquisitions are
expected to provide an excellent platform for growth in the snacks arena.
More recently and to less fanfare
than the typical new product launch,
Kellogg made available its Live
Bright Brain Health Bars. The bars are
the first product introduced by Kellogg to contain Martek Biosciences'
patented, vegetarian life'sDHA. The
companies signed a supply agreement
for life'sDHA four years ago, and at
least for now, the bars are only available on-line through amazon.com.
Available in dark chocolate vanilla and double chocolate
flavors, each 4.9-oz bar contains 100 mg of omega-3 DHA.
The dark chocolate vanilla bar also contains 2 grams of dietary fiber, 14 grams of sugar and 6 grams of protein, while
the double chocolate flavor contains 3 grams of dietary fiber, 15 grams of sugar and 6 grams of protein. Both bars
contain 5 grams of fat and 3.5 grams of saturated fat.

Study shows nutrition bar labeling
more accurate than in the past
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - Although "an enormous range in nutritional content" still exists across bars, new findings from
ConsumerLab.com suggest that labeling on nutrition bars has
become more accurate.
The report, which may be located at www.consumerlab.com/
results/nutbars.asp, found that of the 20 bars it tested, none
showed labeling inaccuracies. This compared with three bars
that showed inaccuracies in 2005 and numerous bars in 2001.
According to ConsumerLab.com, consumers should pay
particular attention to saturated fat, total fat, sugar alcohols and added vitamins when determining the nutritional
content of a bar.
"Bars can be a good occasional source of nutrients such as
protein for people on the go, but they vary dramatically in their
content," said Tod Cooperman, M.D., president of ConsumerLab.com. "Before eating a bar, a consumer should be sure it has
what he or she needs without unwanted ingredients." MBN

Challenges at Kraft
At Northfield, Ill.-based Kraft Foods Inc., bar sales struggled during the past quarter, but Tim McLevish, Kraft Foods
executive vice-president and chief financial officer, said during a July 28 earnings conference call with financial analysts
that the company remains optimistic going forward.
"Our (snack bars) business was down significantly in the
quarter," Mr. McLevish said. "This is mainly due to the timing of new product announcements as well as our rationalizing s.k.u.s (stock-keeping units). However, the trend should
improve in the second half as we invest in quality upgrades
and marketing."
The company hopes to get a boost from LiveActive
Chewy
Granola
Bars, the first-ever,
non-refrigerated bar
containing both a
live probiotic culture
and fiber. Launched
in late July, the bars
are available in blueberry almond, chocolate raspberry and
peanut butter.
The bars will look
to capitalize on the
growing
number
of Americans experiencing
digestive
health issues. Probiotics are live cultures that have been
shown to promote the health of the digestive system.
