Consumer price indices for baked
foods and cereal products falls
The C.P.I. for Cereals and Cereal
Products in August was 220.1, up 0.2%
from July and up 10.7% from August
2007. The index for products within
this category included: flour and prepared mixes, 236.1, down 0.3% from
July but up 17.1% from the previous
year; breakfast cereal, 213.4, down
0.5% from the previous month but up
3.6% from a year ago; and rice, pasta
and corn meal, 230.6, up 1.5% from
July and up 20.1% from August 2007.
The price index for Bakery Products
in August was 265.9, down 0.3% from
July but up 10.3% from August 2007.
The August index for bread was
162.8, down 1.2% from July but up
13.8% from August 2007. Under this
heading, the C.P.I. for white bread
was 299.5, down 0.9% from July but
up 13.2% from August 2007.
For bread other than white,

WASHINGTON - The Consumer
Price Index for baked foods and cereal products in August fell 0.1% from
July, according to the Bureau of Labor
Statistics of the U.S. Department of
Labor. The loss follows 10 consecutive
month-over-month gains, with the last
decline occurring in September 2007,
when the index fell 0.2%. A month after 15 of 18 categories within the index
advanced, 11 of the 18 categories fell
during August, exhibiting a dramatic
turnaround.
The August index for Cereals and
Bakery Products before seasonal adjustment was 250.1% of the 1982-84
average, up 10.5% from a year ago.
For all food at home, the August index was 217.3, up 0.7% from July and
up 6.9% from August 2007.

White pan bread price slides 0.3c in August
WASHINGTON - The average price
paid for white pan bread fell 0.3c per lb
in August, according to the latest data
from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of
the U.S. Department of Labor. The price
of whole wheat bread, meanwhile, rose
1.7c per lb, rebounding from its sharpest month-to-month decline since plummeting 12.8c per lb in October 2005.
The national average retail price of
white pan bread was 138.1c according to the B.L.S. The August price for

pared with August 2007. On a monthto-month basis, the average price for
white pan bread rose 2.2c per lb in the
Midwest and 1.1c in the West. The average price fell 2.7c in the South and
0.8c in the Northeast.
At 195c per lb, the national average
price for whole wheat bread was up
23.6c year-over-year.
The national average price of family
flour in August was 53.9c per lb, down
0.5c from July but up 18.4c from August

uy Rogers earned the nickname
"Boots" while in the Army. He
once wrote a girlfriend about
spending long hours polishing his
boots-even though he served as a
baking school instructor. After baking
and decorating cakes in Viet Nam,
"Boots" spent 16 months at Fort Bragg

then closed after he left. In the Army,

Today, Guy's wife, Diana, works with
the customers out front and handles
the paperwork. Guy claims he can't
run a business from an office and is
on his feet 12 hours a day working in
back with his 15 employees. The shop
specializes in elegant wedding cakes,
which Guy decorates himself.
Guy says his greatest accomplishment
is "doing what my father and grandfather did for a living, and doing it well."
His greatest challenge is to always keep
standards and quality at the same high
level.
