were up 3%
U.S. flour production in 2008 was
down 0.6% from the prior year.
The North American Millers' Association provides funding to the Census
Bureau in support of the compilations
of these quarterly milling statistics.
Kansas in 2008 ranked first
among states in flour production
at 32,842,000 cwts, down 5.1% from
34,614,000 in 2007. Kansas produced
35,264,000 in 2006, 34,767,000 in
2005 and 36,629,000 in 2004.
Kansas in 2008 accounted for 7.9%
of national flour production, down
from 8.3% in 2007. It was 8.8% in
both 2006 and 2005, and 9.3% in
2004. The 2008 share for Kansas was
the smallest of recent history and
contrasts with the peak share of 13%
in 1977 when the state's mills produced 35,769,000 cwts.
In second place was the state
grouping, Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin, at 32,635,000 cwts, down

0.1% from 32,682,000 in 2007. Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin accounted for 7.8% of the national total in both 2008 and 2007.
California was third at 30,458,000
cwts in the year, down 3.3% from
31,485,000 in 2007. It was 7.3% of the
U.S. aggregate in 2008, down from
7.5% a year earlier.
Minnesota was fourth at 28,892,000
cwts, down 4.3% from 30,186,000 in
2007. The latter state accounted for
6.9% of the total, down from 7.2% a
year back.
Missouri was fifth at 27,612,000
cwts, up 1.9% from 27,104,000 in
2007. Missouri output was 6.6% of
the national total, up from 6.5%.
New York and New Jersey came
in at 27,388,000 cwts, down from
27,777,000 in 2007. The latter group
was 6.5% of the U.S. aggregate, the
same as in the prior year.
In seventh place was Ohio at
25,790,000 cwts, up from 24,436,000.
Ohio mills produced 6.2% of the total, up from 5.5% in 2007.
Pennsylvania in eighth aggregated
23,485,000 cwts, up from 23,268,000
in the prior year. These mills represented 5.6% of the national total in
both years.
Other state and state groupings in
order were Texas, 19,135,000 cwts;
Georgia, Florida and South Carolina,
18,574,000; North Dakota, 18,377,000;
Nebraska and Iowa, 18,298,000; Ten-

Quarterly semolina output rises
4.4% from a year earlier
WASHINGTON - Production of
straight semolina and durum flour
by U.S. mills in January-March totaled 8,208,000 cwts, up 4.4% from
7,859,000 in the first quarter of
2008, according to the Bureau of
the Census of the U.S. Department
of Commerce. Semolina production in the first 2009 quarter also
was up 4.3% from 7,867,000 in October-December 2008.
The North American Millers' Association provides funding to the

Production of durum semolina in
January-March 2009 was the 16th
largest for any quarter and ranked
eighth for the first quarter alone.
Beginning in 2000, semolina output data are not fully comparable
with prior years.

Grind of durum wheat in JanuaryMarch 2009 totaled 17,931,000 bus, up
1.9% from 17,589,000 in the first quarter of 2008. It also was up 3.6% from
17,316,000 in the fourth quarter.
Based on these data, semolina extraction in January-March averaged
76.3%, up from 75.7% in OctoberDecember and from 74.5% in the
first quarter of 2008.
In the current report, the Census Bureau lists the 24-hour plant
capacity of U.S. durum mills at
134,000 cwts in the first quarter,
unchanged from October-December and down from 135,000 in the
first quarter of 2008. Census Bureau data suggest durum mills in
January-March operated at 80.6%
of six-day capacity, up from 76.2%
in October-December and 75.6% in
the first quarter of 2008. MBN

The benchmark bellwether daily
flour milling capacity numbers for
2008 (fourth quarter) as compared to
2007 were up in seven states, but also
down as well as unchanged in seven
each. Between the benchmark numbers for 2008 and 2007, U.S. capacity
decreased 3,968 cwts to 1,506,016. Capacity in Texas increased 8,100 cwts,
Tennessee and Kentucky rose 5,000,
Alabama and Louisiana increased
4,662, Nebraska and Iowa climbed
3,520, Oklahoma and Colorado rose
3,100, Ohio increased 1,200 and New
York and New Jersey increased 400.
The sharpest decrease was Kansas,
down 20,000, followed by Pennsylvania, down 5,600, California, down
2,000, Georgia, Florida and South
Carolina, down 1,300, Minnesota,
down 1,000, Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin, down 100 and Utah, down 50.
Others were unchanged including the
all other category.
Between the benchmark numbers for all of 2008 and those for
2007 the rate of grind increased in 8
states and decreased in 13. U.S. rate
of grind decreased 0.6 percentage
points to 88.3%.
In 2008, the rate of grind by Kansas mills gained 7.2 percentage points
from 2007 to 83.9%, followed by Pennsylvania, up 6.4 to 93.3%. Virginia and
Maryland were up 5.8 to 80.1%, North
Carolina was up 5.7 to 82%, Ohio was
up 3.6 to 100.9%, Michigan was up 1.9
to 85.2%, Missouri was up 1.3 to 87.9%,
and Utah was up 0.2 to 82.9%.
The sharpest decrease was Alabama
and Louisiana, down 8.1 to 100%,
North Dakota was down 8 to 77.2%,
Texas was down 7.1 to 77.8%, Tennessee and Kentucky fell 7 to 94.7%, Montana and Idaho was down 6.2 to 97.3%,
Georgia, Florida and South Carolina
dropped 6 to 90.6%, Oklahoma and
Colorado fell 5.9% to 86.1%, Nebraska
and Iowa fell 4 to 89.2%, Minnesota
was down 3.2 to 82.1%, Washington and Oregon declined 3 to 88.1%,
New York and New Jersey eased 1.9
to 89.4%, California fell 1.7 to 92.6%,
and Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin
dropped 0.4 to 102.5%.
The U.S. rate of grind was down 0.6
to 88.3% and all other was up 1.9 to
