in the state at 40.8 bus per acre and projected a crop of
around 333 million bus.
Of all winter wheat states, Oklahoma was forecast to
realize the sharpest reduction in yield. The U.S.D.A.
projected average yield in that state at 23 bus per acre,
down 38% from 37 bus per acre in 2008. Oklahoma wheat
production was projected at 80,500,000 bus, down 52%
from 166,500,000 bus in 2008.
The department also confirmed expectations for a poor
Texas wheat outturn. The Texas crop was projected at
64,800,000 bus, down 35% from 99,000,000 bus a year ago.
Average yield in the state was forecast at 27 bus per acre
compared with 30 bus per acre in 2008.
The U.S.D.A. said in commentary accompanying the
winter wheat data, "Oklahoma and Texas experienced
drought-like conditions during emergence and most of the
growing season. As a result, dryland yields are expected
to suffer from a lack of moisture throughout plant development and grain set. The second week of April delivered
a hard freeze to parts of Kansas and Oklahoma, affecting
earlier-maturing varieties. Severe storms followed, bringing heavy rain, hail and high winds across many areas.
Weather conditions remained cooler and wetter than normal through the first week of May."
The U.S.D.A. soft red winter wheat forecast at around
422 million bus compared with the soft wheat millers'
projection of 408 million bus made at the end of March.
The principal reason for a lower wheat production forecast this year compared with 2008 was reduced harvest
area, as average yield in the key Central states region
was projected to be about 1% higher than in 2008. Yields
in the Southeast were forecast down 3% from a year ago
with yields in 2008 at record levels for many of the states
in the region.
The U.S.D.A. commented, "Cooler-than-normal spring
temperatures coupled with higher-than-normal precipitation in the Corn Belt states of Illinois, Indiana and Ohio
has hampered crop development, but no major disease
problems are reported at this time. Kentucky and Virginia
experienced a generally mild winter and wet spring. As of
May 4, the winter wheat crop in these states was in mostly
good condition."

Oregon and Idaho because of cooler and dryer conditions
earlier this spring.
"Mid-April rain and snow moved across some areas
bringing moisture relief and boosting crop conditions
