Cocoa

Cocoa powder prices held steady last
week amid slow fill-in trading for 2009
and inquiries for 2010. New York cocoa
bean futures prices declined.
Chocolate demand continued to suffer
from global economic weakness, which
resulted in excess stocks of cocoa butter,
which is used in higher-quality chocolate. Some processors in West Africa
would sell powder only if the client also
bought butter. Processors around the
world significantly reduced operations
due to heavy butter stocks.
The International Cocoa Organization
last week forecast the largest yearly drop
in cocoa demand in 50 years would occur
this year with global grind down 6% from
2008. U.S. cocoa imports in March were
down about 37% from a year ago. MBN

in a range of 104@113c a dozen compared
with 101@106c in 2009 and 128c in 2008.
Prices for this year were expected to bottom at 94@96c a dozen in the second quarter and then climb through yearend. MBN

Prices of egg products, especially of
whole eggs, dropped last week, reflecting
recent declines in graded and breaking
egg values. But graded egg prices edged
higher late last week, and breaking stock
held steady, indicating the slide might be
over for the summer sources indicated.
Dried whole eggs, yolks and blends
declined 10c a lb with whites off 5c. Trading was steady to slower than a week earlier. Processors again noted buyers were
placing smaller orders more often so as
not to carry much inventory in the face
of uncertain demand. Egg supplies and
product offers were adequate to ample.
Frozen whole egg prices were 2c a lb
lower, and liquid whole egg prices were
down 3c while both frozen and liquid
whites and yolks were unchanged.
In its initial 2010 supply and demand
projections last week, the U.S. Department
of Agriculture forecast egg production at
7,605 million dozen, up 1% from 7,537 million this year as "production builds upon
the expansion expected to begin during
the second half of 2009." Prices of New
