I.B.C. reenters Southern
California bread market
IRVING, TEXAS - Interstate Bakeries
Corp. is reintroducing its Wonder and
Home Pride brand bread varieties in
the Southern California market. The
company also will begin selling its Nature's Pride bread in the region. I.B.C.
had exited the market in October 2007
during bankruptcy proceedings and
cited an unprofitable marketplace at
that time.
"Today marks an exciting day for
I.B.C., our union employees and management team, our wonderful retail
partners and the scores of loyal Southern California consumers who spoke
up, made their voices heard and urged

us to bring back their favorite breads,"
said Mark Walsh, senior vice-president and general manager of I.B.C.'s California
business unit. "With a
successful restructuring
now behind us, we are a
stronger company with a
revamped cost structure,
which now enables us to
respond to consumer demand and distribute our breads in an
efficient, profitable way."
The move comes a little less than
two years after I.B.C. closed four
bread, bun and roll bakeries in

Union ratifies five-year
agreement with MGP Ingredients
ATCHISON, KAS. - Local #74D of the
United Food and Commercial Workers
(U.F.C.W.) Union on July 15 ratified a
new five-year collective bargaining
unit agreement with MGP Ingredients, Inc. The agreement, which covers union employees at the company's
Atchison plant, takes effect on Aug. 3
and extends through Aug. 31, 2014.
"We are very pleased with the outcome of yesterday's vote by members
of the union local," said Dave Rindom,
vice-president of human resources at

MGPI. "My sincerest compliments go
out to the union's negotiating team
and overall membership for the exemplary manner in which discussions
were held and thoughts exchanged
regarding the various components of
this agreement."
Jason Simmers, president of Local #74D, said the contract shows the
union's willingness to improve the
conditions at MGPI amid challenging
economic times.

BAB debuts bakery cafe concept
featuring muffins
DEERFIELD, ILL. - BAB, Inc. has
launched a new bakery cafe concept,
My Favorite Muffin Your All Day
Bakery Cafe. The first two units have
opened in Littleton and Highlands
Ranch, Colo.
The new concept includes a menu
that crosses multiple dayparts with a
focus on fresh baked products such
as breakfast sandwiches and bagels,
but its main attraction will be a line of
cake-like muffins.
"Our muffins are truly something
special," said Michael Evans, president and chief executive officer of
BAB. "They set us apart from the competition because nobody else has anything like them."
The cafe offers 6-oz "Jumbo" muffins as well as "Mini's" in flavors

Southern California and consolidated routes and distribution centers

the company has continued to bake,
sell, and deliver Hostess and Dolly
Madison snack cakes and donuts in
Southern California.
I.B.C. said it will supply the products from its
Sacramento, Calif., and
Henderson, Nev., bakeries.
I.B.C. launched Nature's Pride in February.

complete line of bread products to
be introduced in several years, is
billed by the company as the "first

The previous labor contract between
the company and Local #74D ran from
Sept. 1, 2005, through Aug. 31, 2008.

a work stoppage at the Atchison plant
that lasted from Sept. 27 through Oct.
10. The work stoppage ended when
union members voted in favor of the
company's offer to reinstate the previous contract through August 2009. MBN

With demand flagging,
Cargill halts hydrogenated
oil output at Wichita
WICHITA, KAS. - Production of hydrogenated oil at the Wichita edible
oil refinery of Cargill will cease in August, the company has announced.
Production of hydrogenated oil will
be shifted to other Cargill facilities, the
company said.
"The demand for hydrogenated oils
has decreased significantly as a result
of trans fat reduction in foods, therefore leaving the plant underutilized,"
said Mike Venker, president of Cargill
Dressings, Sauces and Oils. "We made
every effort to keep the production
at the plant, but ultimately could not
achieve acceptable production efficiencies."
Cargill said the Wichita plant will
continue to produce salad oils and
