Dry milk product prices were steady
to higher last week with the largest gains
in nonfat dry milk (N.D.M.) values after the U.S. Department of Agriculture
raised the N.D.M. support price by 12c,
to 92c a lb, for August through October.
N.D.M. prices in the West, which has
been plagued with excess supplies and
weak prices for months, rose 4@5c a lb to
the highest levels since last November.
Prices in the Central and East were firm
to 2c a lb higher. The U.S.D.A. change
and subsequent price hikes by manufacturers drove many buyers to the sidelines to reassess the market, in part because they were unsure if prices would
revert back to the 80c support level on
Nov. 1, which possibly would result in
lower market values as well. N.D.M.
production remained strong in the Central and East but declined seasonally in
the West.
Lactose prices gained 2c a lb amid tight
supplies and higher contract prices for
August. "Domestic and international demands from confectionery accounts are
building seasonally," the U.S.D.A. said.

Demand exceeded supply in some cases
with interest in 2010 pricing also noted.
Prices of 34% whey protein concentrate
edged up 1c a lb, although a mixed market
tone was noted due to uneven offers and
inventory levels among manufacturers.
Dry whey and buttermilk prices were
unchanged with prices for both showing
firmness in the Central region but slight
weakness in the West. Whey inventories
generally were tight, while buttermilk
powder supplies were more available.
Butter prices at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange eased slightly in active
trading. Churning was steady to active
with more cream available in some areas
as cooler weather slowed cream demand
from ice cream manufacturers. Domestic
demand held steady with little export
interest evident. Most manufacturers
added to inventories for fall needs.
Cheddar cheese prices at the C.M.E.
firmed last week, while prices of all
types of cheese at the wholesale level
were mixed. U.S.D.A. support prices for
cheddar were raised 18c, to $1.31 a lb, for
blocks and to $1.28 a lb for barrels for the
same period as N.D.M. MBN
