Tasty Baking loss
widens in first quarter

When the latest Census Bureau report
on flour production by U.S. mills showed
a gain of nearly 2% in output for the
first quarter of 2010, a note of optimism
arose in the hope that the rise reflected
an increase in domestic disappearance.
Alas, this was not the case. Slightly laterreleased export statistics reveal that the
net flour output rise, 1,662,000 cwts, was
nearly matched by the export gain of
1,353,000 cwts in the same three months.
So, it would appear that domestic use in
the first three months of this year was
probably close to what it was a year ago.
Most important to note is that
domestic demand holding unchanged
in these still troubling economic and
employment times is a good showing.
Of course, gains would be better, but
those have become extremely difficult
in any sector of the food business in
recent months as the result of greatly
heightened consumer awareness of
troubling business conditions and the
agonizingly slow revival that is most
often forecast for employment.
Whatever accounts for the firstquarter flour production gain, it is a
positive for all of grain-based foods.
Most of the export increase headed
for Pakistan, where it likely will be
shipped to strife-torn Afghanistan. This
aid movement once again reflects the
essential role of flour-based foods to
people around the world, a recognition
that is a positive for demand, whether
or not it plays a direct role in domestic
consumption patterns. MBN
