Russia extends grain
export ban
MOSCOW - Russian Prime
Minister Vladimir Putin on
Sept. 1 announced the Russian
grain export ban implemented
on Aug. 15 may extend until after the 2011 harvest. The ban initially was set to expire at the end
of 2010. The announcement provided firm support to U.S. and
world wheat futures markets,
but it failed to have the electric
effect the initial announcement
of the export ban had in early
August because the market
expected Russia to extend the
export embargo. Russia's grain
harvest was sharply reduced
by drought this year, and conditions remained extremely dry as
Russian farmers began planting
the 2011 winter wheat crop. The
market was uncertain whether
the ban would in fact remain in
effect until the fall of 2011.

cake diet to dispel views

MANHATTAN, KAS. - A
professor of human nutrition
at Kansas State University has
begun a 30-day, 1,800-calorie a
day diet, limited entirely to snack
cakes and fatty foods to dispel
common beliefs about nutrition. Mark Haub, an associate
professor in the K-State College
of Human Ecology, said a class
he teaches prompted the idea.
"The overarching principle is to
bring to light some of the issues

with obesity, our understanding
of health, health outcomes and
societal issues on what is good,"
he said. Dr. Haub wants to show
that foods thought to undermine
diets may not have that effect.

Krispy Kreme returns
to profitability
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
Improved same-store sales
helped return Krispy Kreme to
profitability during the second
quarter. For the quarter ended
Aug. 1, the company had income of $2,207,000, equal to
3c per share on the common
stock, which compared with
a loss of $157,000 during the
same quarter of the previous
year. Revenue for the quarter
was $87,932,000, up 6% from
$82,730,000 during the same
quarter of the previous year.
The company also raised its
outlook as it now expects fiscal 2011 operating income to
be in the range of $13 million
to $17 million, up from a previous guidance of $11 million
to $15 million.

U.S.D.A. sugar beet review
may take two years
WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Agriculture said it
may take two years to complete
an environmental impact study
required by an August court
ruling that banned planting of
bioengineered sugar beets and
returned them to regulated status. The department's Animal
and Plant Health Inspection
Service said it anticipates making an interim decision on a request for partial deregulation of
the sugar beets before the end
of 2010. Industry sources said
the U.S.D.A. comment raised
more questions than it answered
about future plantings of bioengineered sugar beets. More than
90% of the 2010 crop was from
such seeds and it was unclear if
there were enough conventional
seeds to plant a full crop in 2011.
The court ruling did not affect
the harvesting and use of the
2010 crop. MBN
