U.S. corn crop down 2%,
soybeans up 1% from August
WASHINGTON - U.S. 2010 corn
production was forecast at 13,160 million bus, down 2% from 13,365 million
bus forecast in August but up slightly
from 13,110 million bus in 2009. Soybean production was forecast at 3,483
million bus, up 1% from 3,433 million
bus forecast in August and up 4%
from 3,359 million bus last year, the
U.S. Department of Agriculture said
in its Sept. 10 Crop Production report.
The U.S.D.A. corn production
number was below the average prereport trade estimate of 13,199 million bus, but the U.S.D.A. soybean
number was above the average of
3,406 million bus. If realized, both
corn and soybean production would
be record high even with the drop in
corn from August.
Wheat production data were not updated from August but will be revised
in the Sept. 30 Small Grains Summary.
Based on Sept. 1 conditions, corn

yield was forecast at 162.5 bus an
acre, down 2.5 bus from the August
forecast and 2.2 bus
below the 2009 record
of 164.7 bus an acre,
the U.S.D.A. said.
Objective yield data
indicated the second
highest ear count on
record after 2009 for
the combined 10 largest producing states,
the U.S.D.A. said, with
record counts forecast
in Iowa, Missouri,
Ohio and Wisconsin.
Increased production from 2009 was forecast in most
eastern Corn Belt states but lower
outturn was expected in most states
in the western Corn Belt. Corn production in top-producing Iowa was
forecast at 2,327 million bus, down
5% from 2009, while outturn in the

second-largest growing state of Illinois was forecast at 2,158 million
bus, up 5%. Area for harvest was
down from a year ago in Iowa but
up in Illinois, and yields were down
in Iowa but unchanged in Illinois.
Corn area harvested for grain in
2010 was forecast at
81 million acres, unchanged from August
but up 2% from 2009.
The corn harvest was
off to an early start,
especially compared
with last year 's late
crop. Combined in
the 18 major states as
of Sept. 12 was 11%
of the crop, about a
week ahead of normal (6% as the 2005-09 average for
the date) and well ahead of 3% a
year ago, the U.S.D.A. said in its
weekly Crop Progress report.
"Above normal temperatures
across much of the nation's major
corn producing areas during the
first half of August promoted rapid
phonological development of this
year 's crop," the U.S.D.A. said.
Soybean yield was forecast at a
record 44.7 bus an acre, up 0.7 bu
from both August and the previous
record high in 2009. Harvested area
was forecast at a record 78 million
acres, unchanged from August but
up 2% from 2009. Production in the
two major states was forecast at 528
million bus in Iowa, up 9% from
2009, and at 472 million bus in Illinois, up 10%.
"If realized, the forecasted yield
in Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska,
New York and North Dakota will be
record high," the U.S.D.A. said.
The 2010 rice crop was forecast
at 255,319,000 cwts, up 4% from
245,882,000 cwts forecast in August
and up 16% from 219,850,000 cwts
in 2009. Harvested area was forecast at 3,623,000 acres, up 4% from
August and up 17% from 2009. The
crop in the six major rice states
was 54% harvested as of Sept. 12,
well ahead of last year and average, the U.S.D.A. said in its Crop
Progress report.
Sorghum production in 2010 was
forecast at 376,469,000 bus, down
2% from 383,435,000 bus in August
and from 382,983,000 bus in 2009,
the U.S.D.A. said. Unlike most other
crops, sorghum crop development
and harvest were running behind
