Appellate court blocks destruction
of sugar beet root stock
SAN FRANCISCO - The U.S. Ninth
Circuit Court of Appeals last week
granted a temporary stay of a district
judge's order to destroy sugar beet
root stock, or stecklings, currently being grown under U.S. Department of
Agriculture permits.
"The beet sugar industry's growers, processors, technology providers
and seed producers are pleased that
the Court of Appeals will now have
a meaningful opportunity to consider
relevant legal precedents and unrebutted evidence that the planting of
these permitted steckling fields is
authorized by law and would cause
no harm," the Sugar Industry Biotech
Council said.
The U.S.D.A.'s Animal and Plant
Health Inspection Service issued

permits in September to allow planting of the stecklings, which were
intended for research and breeding
use and for seed and hybrid seed
production for 2012 and beyond.
Sources indicated the stay would
provide adequate time to harvest the
seedlings by late December.
Judge Jeffrey White in U.S. District
Court for Northern California on Nov.
30 ordered the stecklings be "removed
from the ground" as of Dec. 7. The
order was part of an ongoing lawsuit
filed in 2008 by the Center for Food
Safety and others concerning the use
of "Roundup Ready" sugar beet seeds
from Monsanto Co. that were approved by the U.S.D.A. in 2005. An
estimated 95% of the 2010 U.S. sugar
beet crop acreage was planted to the

Greencore acquires On A Roll Sales
DUBLIN, IRELAND - Greencore
Group P.L.C. has acquired On A Roll
Sales Inc., a manufacturer of fresh
sandwiches, wraps, calzones, salads
and ready-to-eat meals and based in
Brockton, Mass. According to Greencore, On A Roll Sales has gross assets
of approximately $3.4 million (as of
Sept. 30).
"On A Roll is a promising, growing

business with a well diversified customer base of major retailers and convenience stores," said Eoin Tonge, development director for Greencore. "This acquisition will provide an additional revenue stream to Greencore USA's Food
to Go category and will complement
our existing businesses in Newburyport
(Mass.) and Cincinnati."

Columbia Grain and J.R. Simplot
to partner on rail terminal
CRYSTAL, N.D. - Columbia Grain
and the J.R. Simplot Co. have joined
forces to create a rail distribution and
storage terminal in Crystal that is
scheduled for completion in March.
"I feel there will be advantages for
both companies by offering competitive grain bids and crop nutrients at
the same location, and our
customers will see benefits, too," said Tom Hammond, president and chief
executive officer of Columbia Grain, a grain exporter based
in Portland, Ore., with operations in six
western states.
Columbia Grain's storage facilities
will have a maximum one-time capacity of 1.3 million bus. The Simplot facility will hold 26,000 tons of dry crop
nutrients. Storage facilities of the two
companies may accommodate 120-car

Simplot plans to add seed storage facilities to the operation, said Dave Dufault, head of the Simplot Grower Solutions network of farm services stores

The J.R. Simplot Co., a privately held
agribusiness company based in Boise,
Idaho, has an integrated
portfolio that includes
phosphate mining, fertilizer manufacturing, farming,
ranching and cattle production, food processing, food brands, and
other enterprises related to agriculture.

operation reinforces to our customers

consideration."

not affect the 2010 Roundup Ready
sugar beet seed crop that was planted
prior to September and that it would
have little impact on a pending decision on whether to allow farmers
to plant Roundup Ready sugar beet

ADM-Benson Quinn to build
grain elevator in S.D.
DECATUR, ILL. - ADM-Benson Quinn,
a division of Archer Daniels Midland Co.,
said it will build a grain elevator in Tulare,
S.D., that will have a storage capacity of
more than 2 million bus and will be used
to store corn, soybeans and wheat from local growers. Construction is scheduled to
begin by the end of 2010 and is expected to
be complete in late 2011.
"Farmers have increased crop yields significantly in recent years," said Scott Nagel,
president of ADM-Benson Quinn.
The Tulare elevator will be constructed
of concrete and steel and will include a
10,000-bu-per-hour dryer and efficient
truck unloading and railcar loading capabilities, ADM-Benson Quinn said.
ADM operates 142 domestic terminal,
sub-terminal, country and river elevators
in the United States with an aggregate
storage capacity of 400 million bus. MBN
