Safeway looks to sell
Dominick’s chain
PLEASANTON, CALIF. —
Safeway Inc. on Oct. 10 said it
has sold four of its Dominick’s
stores in the Chicago area as
part of a plan to exit the greater
Chicago marketplace. The four
stores (two in Chicago proper,
one in Glen, Ill., and one in
Glenview, Ill.) have been acquired by New Albertsons,
Inc., which operates Jewel-Osco stores in the Chicago area.
“Safeway has decided to exit
the Chicago market and focus its efforts in other operating areas where its business is
stronger,” the company said.
Safeway operates 72 stores under the Dominick’s name in
Chicago and communities to
the west and north of the city.
When Safeway acquired Dominick’s in 1998, the retailer had
116 stores and annual sales of
$2.6 billion. New Albertsons
operates 176 Jewel-Osco stores
in Iowa, Illinois and Indiana.

Seaboard acquires 50% of
Brazilian food company
MERRIAM, KAS. — Seaboard
Corp. recently announced it has
acquired a 50% interest in Belarina Alimentos S/A, a Brazilian food company engaged in
flour milling, pasta production
and noodle distribution. The remaining 50% of the company is
owned by CGG, a Brazilian grain
origination and trading company. Belarina began operations
under its current name in June
2010 through a consolidation
of separate businesses. Since its
founding, the company has been
expanding and modernizing its
milling base. It enhanced its sales

and distribution network by acquiring a new fleet of vehicles.
“Seaboard is excited to enter into
the Brazilian grain processing
business where we believe our
long experience in grain processing and integrated supply chain
models can help provide Belarina with low cost raw materials
and high quality finished products, particularly given the partnership with a leading Brazilian
grain trading company, CGG,”
said Dave Dannov, chief executive officer for commodity trading and milling at Seaboard.

Cargill sells Nebraska
grain elevator
LINCOLN, NEB. — Cargill has
sold a grain elevator in Lincoln
to Interstate Commodities, Inc.,
an agribusiness
company based
in Troy, N.Y.,
that has an office in Omaha. The elevator has
a capacity of 13,110,000 bus, according to the Grain & Milling
Annual 2013, a publication of
Sosland Publishing. “In recent
years we have been focused
on expanding through valueadded service in agricultural
commodity transportation and
logistics,” said Greg Oberting,
chief executive officer of Interstate Commodities. Cargill
acquired the Lincoln facility in
1999 from Continental Grain
Co.’s worldwide commodity
marketing business. Cargill still
has 16 other Nebraska facilities.
